Now a new study has showed a key trick in getting the best deal - asking for a range of pay, rather than a single figure.

The research contradicts(与……抵触)traditional wisdom that argues giving a range will automatically cause employers to focus on the lower end of the offer. For instance, if you want  $90,000 and you suggest a range between $90,000 and $110,000, the study finds employers are more likely to make a higher offer.

But simply asking for $110,000 in the first place increases the chances of the deal falling apart, as it is a sign that the employee is not open to negotiation(协商).

The team made the discovery after running a series of experiments involving Amazon Mechanical Turk workers and business school students.

Respondents were asked not only what they thought their negotiation partner's lowest acceptable offer could be, but also questions designed to show how they viewed their partner.

One type of offer, called a “bracketing” range, places the figures on either side of the desired salary. For instance, if you want $90,000, you'd ask for a range of between  $80,000 and $100,000. This causes employers to offer the lower end of the scale, but, unlike single figure offers, the deals rarely fall apart as the negotiator is often viewed favourably. “If your goal is to get along with someone without losing money, the‘bracketing' range offers may be a good move,”Dr Ames told the Wall Street Journal.

The“backdown”range offer, meanwhile, uses the target salary as the high figure in the range. For $90 ,000, an employer would ask for a range between $70,000 to $90,000. These range offers , predicta-bly, give the worst results in terms of pay.

However, Dr Ames warns against setting the range too high and says the most successful range is usually within 20 per cent of the target offer.

【小题1】According to traditional wisdom, _____________ .

Four Ways to Beat Summer Weight Gain

When we think of the summer holiday, most of us think of outdoor fun. So it seems like we should naturally lose weight over the summer holiday. In reality, the summer holiday isn’t all beach volleyball and water sports. Therefore,we can gain weight easily in the summer holiday.【小题1】 Here are four ways to beat summer weight gain.

1.【小题2】 When we don’t have a plan,it’s easy to spend the summer holiday moving from the couch to the computer, with regular stops before the fridge. Avoid this by aiming for a specific goal, like volunteering, mastering a new skill,or working at a job. Just be sure to plan for some free time so you can relax a little!

2. Stay busy. When we’re bored,it’s easy to fall into a trap of doing nothing and then feeling low on energy. In addition to helping you avoid the cookie jar, filling your days with stuff to do can give you a sense of accomplishment.【小题3】

3. Beat the heat. Don’t let summer heat put your exercise plans on hold.【小题4】 If a gym isn’t your scene, try bowling or an indoor climbing wall. If you love being outdoors, move a regular run or soccer game to early morning or evening.

4.【小题5】 With school out, we lose our daily routines. If you don’t have a specific job or an activity to get up for,it’s easy to sleep late, watch too much TV,and snack more than usual. Make sure your summer days have some structure—like getting up at the same time each day. Plan activities for specific times, like exercising before breakfast.

A.Stick to a schedule.
B.Get going with goals.
C.Relax by walking outside.
D.Move your workout indoors.
E.We usually stay at home in the summer holiday.
F.That’s especially true if a dream summer job falls through.
G.However,it’s easy to avoid this problem if we know what to look out for.
