Technology is creating big changes in the music industry. Music lovers listen to and buy music on the Internet. They can watch live concerts of favorite artists online. And music makers, as well as music industry officials, use social media to increase the public’s interest.

Nick Sherwin is the founder of the band called Suburban Skies. He says today’s technology permits a band to control its own future. He said, “Social media is a wonderful thing. You can make use of it to reach the public. “ Sherwin says the Internet and social media have created possibilities for musicians. He says the new way to success is to give visitors more than one type of experience.” The most important thing is the content. You have to have songs and videos to show the audience. But I think it is extremely important to do shows, to build your brand, and to make you well known,” Sherwin said.

Music industry officials discussed the future of the business during an international conference (会议) in Los Angeles, California. They said musicians are choosing to perform live across the country, following the drop in CD sales in the United States. Rob Light is head of music with a creative artist agency (代理机构). He said, “ Most of the income for artists is now coming from the live marketplace.”

Along with the popularity of live music there has been a big increase in the number of music festivals. These events are advertised on social media. Pasquale Rotella leads Insomniac, a company that produces electronic dance music festivals in several countries. “Someone could make it in his bedroom and put it out there. People can gain fans online without anyone’s help. That has completely helped the growth of dance music,” said Rotella.

Bob Pitt man leads the radio organization — Clear Channel Communications. He says music lovers are still listening to the radio, although there are new ways of finding music. He says 70 percent of Americans say they discover new music from what they hear on the radio. But Rob Light says radio will soon be a thing of the past. However, Nick Sherwin is not worried. He just wants to reach everyone who likes his style of music with the help of the Internet.

In the modern world, there is an unfortunate tendency to value profit over intelligence. People may know a practice is harmful, but continue to do it anyway because it produces an in-demand product. Fortunately, there are inventors who work tirelessly to develop more responsible solutions. Sally Fox is one such individual.

Before Fox's invention of Foxfibre cotton, naturally colored cotton could only be spun(纺线)by hand, which was such a long and laborious process that businesses chose to take white cotton, bleach(漂白)it,dye it and spin it on a machine. This produced the colored fabrics people wanted, but also created a lot of pollution through the bleaching and dying processes. Sadly, there weren't really any practical choices available until Sally Fox came along in the late 1980s and revolutionized the industry.

While working as a pollinator(传花粉者)for a cotton breeder looking to develop more pest-resistant plants,Fox began breeding brown and green cotton, picking out the best seeds that produced the longest fibres and replanting them year after year. Finally, she created two kinds of colored cotton that could be spun on a machine, and she purchased a small lot of land to grow them. Sally even received Plant Variety Protection Certificates for the new cotton.

By the early 1990s,Sally Fox had had a 10-million-dollar business that produced naturally colored cotton for major companies like Levi's,Esprit,Land's End and L. L. Bean. It was a more environmentally friendly product that was also turning a profit. After globalization forced most of the spinning mills(工厂)to South America and Southeast Asia,Fox's business took a hit,but she continues to make new naturally colored cotton to this day. Each new color takes about 10 years to produce—but, for Sally Fox,the patience is worth the payoff.

【小题1】Sally Fox was famous because she invented __________.

Experts believe that the best time to teach kids language skills is when they are babies. Most times the task is easily accomplished with parents reading or talking to their babies. However,in some cases that is not possible due to parents' busy work schedules or when kids are born deaf. Now,a blue-eyed robot,a human image, and some high-tech neuroscience may be able to assist parents with this important developmental task.

The Robot AVatar thermal-Enhanced system,or RAVE,is the brainchild of a team of researchers led by Laura-Ann Petitto,an educational neuroscientist. The learning process begins when the robot's camera, which is focused on the baby's face, notices tiny changes in his/her body temperature. This, combined with the baby's facial expression, causes the robot to turn its head and guide the baby's attention to a computer screen,on which a human image starts to communicate with the baby. For example,if the baby points towards the screen, the image might respond,“Are you pointing to me?”and follow that up with a nursery rhyme or fairy tale, all in American Sign Language(ASL). The“conversation”continues until the kid loses interest.

The researchers found that babies as young as 6 to 8 months old began to move their hands in a rhythm similar to ASL after communicating with RAVE for just a few minutes. Petitto says natural language, whether communicated through speech or sign, activates(激活)the same parts of the brain and believes the rhythmic motion proves the babies are learning the essential elements of communication.

What sets this technique apart from other methods, such as showing educational videos or television shows,is its interactive(互动的)nature and real-time response to the baby's actions. The researchers say that while it is too early to determine the system's long-term influence on baby communication, the initial response has been very encouraging. Next, they plan to introduce a robot that can both sign and speak to babies.

【小题1】What can the RAVE system help parents do?
A.Improve babies' health condition.
B.Take good care of babies.
C.Develop babies' language skills.
D.Keep company with babies.
【小题2】What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.How babies learn ASL effectively.
B.How parents educate their babies.
C.How robots talk and read to babies.
D.How the RAVE system works.
【小题3】What indicates babies are learning with the help of the RAVE system?
A.Interest in videos and TV shows.
B.Changes in their body temperature.
C.Improvement in their natural language
D.Hand movements in a rhythm like ASL.
【小题4】What do the researchers think of the RAVE system?
A.Promising.B.Impractical.
C.Satisfactory.D.Disappointing.

The idea of being able to walk on water has long interested humans greatly. Sadly, biological facts prevent us ever accomplishing such a thing without artificial aid---we simply weigh too much, and all our mass pushes down through our relatively small feet, resulting in a lot of pressure that makes us sink.

However, several types of animals can walk on water. One of the most interesting is the common basilisk Basilicus basilicus, a lizard (蜥蜴)native to Central and South America. It can run across water for a distance of several meters, avoiding getting wet by rapidly hitting the water’s surface with its feet. The lizard will take as many as 20 steps per second to keep moving forward. For humans to do this, we,d need huge feet that we could bring up to our ears in order to create adequate w hitting. ’’

But fortunately there is an alternative : cornflour. By adding enough of this common thickening agent to water (and it does take a lot), you can create a “non-Newtonian” liquid that doesn’t behave like normal water. Now, if the surface of the water is hit hard enough, particles(粒子)in the water group together for a moment to make the surface hard. Move quickly enough and put enough force into each step, and you really can walk across the surface of an adequately thick Liquid of cornflour.

Fun though all this may sound, it’s still rather messy and better read about in theory than carried out in practice. If you must do it, then keep the water wings handy in case you start to sink--and take a shower afterward!

【小题1】Walking on water hasn’t become a reality mainly because humans______.
A.are not interested in it

【小题3】What is the function of the cornflour according to the passage?
A.To create a thick liquid.
B.To turn the water into solid.
C.To help the liquid behave normally.
D.To enable the water to move rapidly.
【小题4】What is the author’s attitude toward the idea of humans’ walking on water?
A.It is risky but beneficial.
B.It is interesting and worth trying.
C.It is crazy and cannot become a reality.
