Harry Potter brings us a wonderful world of magic that has caught the imagination of millions of people on both the printed page and the silver screen with best-selling novels and popular films. However, you may be surprised to hear that children in Britain, home to the world's most popular novel Harry Potter, have a problem with reading. The problem, as far as the government, experts and many parents are concerned, is that kids are just not doing enough of it.

It's not just a question of children not reading the classics(经典作品)-difficult works by William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. Reading generally is in crisis(危机)in the UK. Many different reasons are gven: lack of encouragement from parents, competition from TV and the Internet and computer games. But the government and schools have not given up on the young. There are many activities to encourage kids to read more and develop children's love for reading.

The National Literacy Trust(NLT), an organization set up by the government, has a plan called "Reading Champions". This summer Reading Champions has a challenge called "Quest Seekers". It is designed to take children into a mysterious and wonderful land where they can discover the joy of reading. The idea is to turn a trip to their local libraries into a kind of magical adventure, the kind that young readers love in the Harry Potter books.

Many older British people like myself feel sad because so few of the younger generation read books. We know that when you have a book, you will never be bored. Unlike some other school subjects like math and science, for many which will always be a necessary thing to learn rather than much fun, reading can be a real pleasure and books are lifelong friends.

When HarmonyOS, the Chinese self-developed operating system for Huawei mobile devices, was released on Aug 9, it quickly became a hot topic on social media. Many believe it not only represents the rise of the country as a tech power, but also pays tribute (致敬) to classical Chinese culture by naming the system “Hongmeng” in Chinese. “Hongmong” is a classical word from the Taoist (道家) text Zhuangzi. In the ancient times of Chinese myths and legends, “Hongmeng” was used to describe the original state of the universe before matter existed.

For HarmonyOS, “Hongmeng” indicates the developers’ aim to make an innovative operating system, unlike any other. Besides “Hongmeng”, Huawei has also registered many of its products under the names of legendary creatures from Chinese mythology, such as “Qilin”for the Kin mobile chip, and “Kunpeng” for the server chip. Many Chinese internet users and media have praised Huawei’s use of these names, “as they stand for Chinese wisdom and ancient people’s imagination and spirit of exploration”, Global Times noted.

In fact, Huawei is not alone in using traditional culture for modern ventures. Ne Zha, the new film, also portrays traditional culture in a modern context. Earlier this month it became the biggest animated movie in China and was called “the glorious light of domestic anime”. The movie is loosely based on the well-known work of classical Chinese mythology The Investiture of the Gods. Unlike his attractive heroic character in previous cinematic works, Ne Zha is shown as a rebellious underdog, who has to overcome hardship and his dark fate to become a hero. Many young Chinese people can relate to Ne Zha, who encourages them to become dream-chasers and fate-changers. As Global Times put it, today by revisiting and incorporating a modern context, “ancient mythology has the power to stir up contemporary imagination in young people”. After all, imagination is the beginning of creation.

Forty percent of teens say they have been hit or nearly hit by a car, motorcycle or bike while walking, according to a new report released by the Safe Kids Worldwide organization.

Safe Kids Delaware has released a list of safety tips children and teens should follow in order to remain safe while walking. The group said it is important to put down phones and remove headphones while crossing the street, make eye contact with drivers before crossing, and remain visible to drivers even in the dark.

"We all know about the dangers of distracted(思想不集中的)driving, but we need to talk to our children, especially teens, about the dangers of walking while they are distracted by using technology like listening to music with headphones on,and texting on cellphones,"said Kim O'Malley, the pedestrian(行人)safety conductor for Safe Kids Delaware.

Teens on the Moue is the name of the report, which explores the walking behavior of  1,040 teenagers between the ages of 13 to 19.Half of the surveyed teens admitted they were distracted by a mobile device while crossing the street. The study also found that more often than not, those who were hit or nearly hit had not been using a crosswalk(人行横道)or had been running across the street.

By comparison, just two children aged 5 to 9 were killed at that time and another 79 were injured. The new report expands on findings from a similar one in 2015 that showed one in five high schoolers and one in eight middle schoolers crossed the street while distracted by using technology.

If Confucius(孔子) were alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But that doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.
