Do you think you can communicate (交流) without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "No". You nod and people know you are saying "Yes".

People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things.

 Books can tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV and films all help us to communicate with each other. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.

Run Away From Fire

If there is a big fire in your flat, what should you do? What mustn't you do?

Make a towel(毛巾)wet and cover your mouth with it. Make your clothes wet with water. Try to get out of the house at once(立刻). Don't take too many things with you. Don't come back for your money or other things. Don't take the lift(电梯) when you get out of your flat. Walk down the stairs. If your clothes catch fire, don't run. Roll(滚)on the ground to make the fire die down(熄灭). If there is a lot of smoke, crawl(爬行)on the ground. Smoke is always high in the air. If your flat is on a tall building, don't jump down. Stay by the window and people may come to help you soon.

Where does rain come from? Rain always comes from clouds. But where do clouds come from? How does water get into the sky?

Think about your bathroom. There is hot water in your bath. Steam(蒸汽)goes up from the hot water. The steam makes small clouds in the bathroom. These warm clouds meet the cold walls and windows, and then we see small drops of water on the walls and windows.

The world is like your bathroom. The sun shines on the ocean. The water in the ocean becomes warm. Some of the water goes up into the sky and makes clouds. The wind carries the clouds for hundreds of kilometers(千米). Then the clouds meet cold air in the sky, and we see drops of water. The drops of water are rain.

The rain falls and runs into rivers. Rivers run into the ocean. And the water from the ocean makes clouds and more rain. So water is always moving from the ocean to clouds, then to rivers and again to the ocean.

The sun and the wind are arguing(争执).

The sun says, “I can make people take off their jackets. I am stronger than you.”The wind says, “No, I am stronger than you. I can blow. I can make people take off their jackets, too.”

A man goes out for a walk. He asks a tree, “How is the weather today? Is it hot outside?” “No. It is cold. It is windy,” the tree answers. The wind sees the man. He tries to blow the man's jacket off. “It's cold,” the man says. No matter(无论)how hard the wind blows, the man holds his jacket tightly(紧紧地).

The man goes out for a walk, again. He asks the tree, “How is the weather outside? Is it cold?” “No, It is sunny.” the tree answers. The sun sees the man. He shines strongly. “Oh. Its hot today.” the man says. He takes off his jacket.

The sun says to the wind, “Haha. I win. See! I am stronger than you.”

Two young trees are standing at the top of a hill. Their names are Tim and Alan. One day, it's sunny and warm. Some birds are singing in the trees. The wind blows, and the trees are talking. “What do you want to be when you grow up?” asks Tim. “I'm not sure. I think I want to be a chair or a desk,” answers Alan, “Maybe I want to be a toy box. I like children.” “What do you want to be when you grow up?” asks Alan. “Me?” says Tim, “I just want to be a tree. I want to be a home for birds. I want to have many apples. And when it's sunny and hot, people and animals can stand under me.”

It is Saturday. The Browns are at home. Mrs Brown is in the kitchen. She’s making noodles. The noodles are very delicious. Do you want to have a taste? Mr Brown isn't in the living room. He is outside. He is washing his car. The car is new and very beautiful. So he looks after it very well. Jim is in the garden. He is playing football with some other boys. Where is his sister Sue? She's in her bedroom with her friend, Ann. They are watching the Animal World.

It is early in the morning. Mr White is cutting the grass in the yard. Suddenly, his neighbour Mr Black runs out and helps him.

Mr White is very happy and he asks Mr Black, “Do you often help people cut grass?”

“No!”

“So why do you get up and help me?”

Mr Black says, “I help you cut the grass so that I can go back to sleep again.”

Peter is a pupil in Grade Four. He likes sports very much. He likes football, basketball, table tennis and swimming. From Monday to Wednesday he plays football. From Thursday to Friday he plays table tennis. From Saturday to Sunday he plays basketball and swims. He is good at swimming. Look, he is swimming with his father in the swimming pool. They are every happy.

It is Friday evening. Liu Ying and Wang Lin go home from school. They are good friends. On the way, an old woman with a bag in her hand comes up and asks, “Can you help me?” “Of course, granny.
