Britain is a very worldwide country. Women in Britain are usually independent and used to entering public places by themselves. The British are generally quite tolerant - they like to help if they can so don't be afraid to ask for help. The British people sometimes seem a little cool and it needs to take time to build close friendships. However，most people respond politely and positively to offers of friendship. Don't forget that if they are not familiar with your culture，they won't understand your needs and concerns unless you explain them.

But on campus you might be surprised by the lack of formality（遵守礼节）. In this relaxed attitude ，most members of faculty （全体教师）enjoy being with students and joining in conversation whether or not it is directly related to studying work. Social spaces and common rooms on campus will usually  contain a mixture of staff and students informally chatting over tea or coffee.

For drinking， alcohol is offered to anyone aged over 18. It's perfectly acceptable for adults to drink alcohol in proper amounts. For many British people ，drinking is a common part of social life -“ going out for a drink” is how they relax or spend time with friends. This doesn't mean that you have to drink alcohol. If you don't want to，you can always ask for a non-alcoholic drink instead.

You know，many people in Britain smoke. However， in some ways smoking is less acceptable than drinking， and from summer 2010 smoking was not allowed in all pubs，clubs and restaurants in England. Most restaurants provide separate smoking and non-smoking areas， and smoking is not allowed in many public places including  buses and the London Underground. If you smoke in these places，you have to pay a fine. If you are eating or drinking with friends - especially at someone else's house - it is polite to ask before you light your cigarette.

George's family came to Australia from Greece in 【小题1】 1980s. At first, they didn't feel they belonged there, but now they 【小题2】（attach）to the land they live on.    How different can other cultures be？Very different！People probably speak different languages and have beliefs and customs very different from yours. They can eat different foods and live in different types of houses. However，they can also be similar in ways of connecting with each other. We sometimes call these means of communication universal（共同的）languages.

Some legends hold that，thousands of years ago，there was a single language spoken by everyone on Earth. Of course，historical evidence does not support this，but it is fun to think about a time when everyone may have been able to communicate in the same language.

Today，there are thousands of languages spoken around the world. Yet，there are some means of communication that go beyond words and allow people of different backgrounds to communicate and share emotions and feelings. For example，some people believe music is a universal language. There may be some scientific support for this idea. Experts have learned that，across cultures，people can recognize three common emotions in music:happiness，sadness and fear.

So what other types of universal languages might there be？Some people believe dance is a universal language. Along with music，dancing seems to be a common interest shared by people all over the world. Do you think you could see a dance from another culture and make some reasonable（合理的）guesses about the ideas and emotions behind it？We bet you could！

Another universal language that you might not have thought of is mathematics! If you think about it now, it just makes sense.  The value of pi is roughly 3. 14159 no matter where you are on Earth. Similarly, figuring out the value of something involves the same mathematical calculations, regardless of whether you' re counting in dollars, pesos or coconuts.

   The people of Reykjavik are used to lying down for the winter, when each day brings with it only a few hours of sunlight. February coming, they’re more than ready to wake up from hibernation（冬眠）and welcome the first signs of spring. The local authorities decided this was a good time of a year to try to raise people’s spirits, and in 2002 they set up the Winter Lights Festival（February 7 to 10）. Starting out as Museum Night, when museums waived their fees and stayed open until midnight, the festival has grown to an event that marks the coming return of daylight. For a few days, the city comes alive with bright lights, street performances, theater, dances, and live music. Shops, cafés, outdoor hot pools and the museums stay open until 12:00 pm and they’re all free of charge, with free bus services provided. The Blue Lagoon is Iceland’s most famous tourist attraction. Being an amazing place at any time of day, it is magical at dusk, when the steamy, ice blue waters shine in color. The Imagine Peace Tower, Yoko Ono’s memorial to John Lennon, was first lit by Ono on October 9, 2007, Lennon’s birthday, and shone until December 8, the date he was killed in 1980. It’s lit on the same date every year, as well as New Year’s Eve and spring equinox, which in 2013 is on March 20.
