We all know the keys to living longer:eating healthily, exercising daily, and avoiding bad lifestyle habits, but do you know that practicing these simple steps when you’re 50 and older can add more years to your life?

According to a new research conducted by Harvard University scientists, adults who follow five healthy habits which include never smoking, maintaining a body mass index(BMI)(体重指数)below 30,exercising for at least 30 minutes a day, drinking alcohol only reasonably, and following a well-balanced diet, can add a decade or more to their lifespan.

The study, published in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation, suggests that men over age 50 who follow these five lifestyle habits can add up to 12 years to their lives while women who follow these healthy habits can add 14 years to their lifespan. While the method of living a longer and healthier life hasn’t changed much over the years, this new information regarding the benefits of working out and eating healthily later in life is a bit of a breakthrough in terms of how we look at aging.

Modern medicine often treats the elderly with a more reactive approach, focusing on discovering and creating medicines and therapies to combat(防止)life-threatening illnesses like cancer and especially heart disease. According to scientists who conducted this study, the focus should be on preventative(预防的)measures, making sure aging adults are adapting healthy habits before they reach a stage in life when health issues normally arise.

It is very important to put prevention through diet and lifestyle changes first. Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death in the United States, while heart disease in particular can arise because of certain lifestyle habits. One of those habits is smoking, which scientists said was the biggest determining factor in a person’s lifespan. Researchers found that there was a direct connection between an adult’s risk of early death and his lifestyle habits, with those following all five of the healthy habits enjoying significantly longer lives.

Ask most people anywhere in the world what they want out of life and the reply will probably be“to be happy”. Ed Deiner,an American psychology professor, has spent his whole life studying what makes people happy, comparing levels of happiness between cultures and trying to find out exactly why we enjoy ourselves.

Many people would say that this question does not need an answer. But Professor Deiner has one anyway. “If you’re a cheerful, happy person, your marriage is more likely to last, and you’re more likely to make money and be successful in your job. On average, happy people have stronger immune systems(免疫系统),and there is some evidence that they live longer. ”

So who are the world’s happiest people? It depends on how the word is defined. There is individual(个人的)happiness, the sense of joy we get when we do something we like. But there is also the feeling of satisfaction we get when we know that others respect us and approve of how we behave. According to Professor Deiner, the Western world pursues individual happiness while Asia prefers mutual satisfaction.

“In the West, the individualistic culture means that your mood matters much more than it does in the East. People ask themselves if they are doing what is fun or interesting. They become unhappy when they can’t do any of these things. If you ask people from Japan or China whether they are happy, they tend to look at what has gone wrong in their lives. If not much has gone wrong, then they are satisfied. ”

“People from Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries have the happiest culture,”Professor Deiner found. “The biggest cultural difference is to do with pride and shame. Hispanic cultures report much more pride and much less shame than others. ”

Income(收入)also makes a big difference to people’s happiness, but only at the lowest levels. Average income earners in the US are much happier than people in poverty. But millionaires are only a little bit happier than people on average incomes. It seems that money makes us happy when we have enough to feel safe.

A calorie is a unit of energy, not a measure of weight or nutrient density. The calories you see on nutrition labels, however, are actually kilocalories. The calories on food packaging always refer to kilocalories, even though it just says “calories”. One kilocalorie is the amount of energy required to heat 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius. Calories in our food all come from one of the three nutrients: fats, carbohydrates and proteins.

In 1990, the U. S. government passed the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act, which means that before any packaged food in the U. S. hits the shelves, food scientists have to measure its nutrients and calories. One way to do this is using a tool called bomb calorimeter(弹氧热卡计). This tool directly measures the amount of energy that a food contains. To use this tool, scientists place the food in question in a sealed(密封的)container surrounded by water and heat it until the food is completely burned off. Scientists then record the rise in water temperature to determine the number of calories in the product.

Food scientists also rely on a calculation developed by the 19th-century U. S. chemist Wilbur Olin Atwater to indirectly estimate the number of calories in food products. Calorimeters don’t take into account that humans lose some calories through heat and feces(类便). Atwater’s experiments found that proteins and carbohydrates each have about 4 calories per gram and fats have 9 calories per gram.

However, some experts say that the Atwater system is outdated and inaccurate. A 2012 study found that the energy content of certain foods, such as nuts, could not be accurately calculated by the Atwater system. Besides, it does not take into account the digestive process, but assumes the complete conversion of nutrients to energy.

【小题1】What can we learn about the unit of energy on nutrition labels?
A.It actually means calories.
B.It refers to kilocalories.
C.It reads kilograms.
D.It employs degrees.
【小题2】What should be done to measure the amount of calories according to the calorimeter?
A.Heat the food in an open container until the food is completely burned off.
B.Take the calories through heat and feces into consideration.
C.Learn the calculation developed by Wilbur Olin Atwater.
D.Calculate the amount of energy in food products directly.
【小题3】How many calories does a food containing 10 grams of proteins and 5 grams of fats have according to the Atwater system?
A.About 40.B.About 45.
C.About 85.D.About 130.
【小题4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.How Are Calorie Counts Calculated?
B.Where do Calories Come from?
C.Can Nutrients Be Converted to Energy Totally?
D.Nutrients and Calories Listed on a Food Label

Storing food is common in members of the crow family. A new study tested the birds outside for this naturally occurring behavior, which may have evolved(进化)specifically because it gives crows a survival advantage. Some crow species are known to naturally use tools to recover food. So the researchers tested whether the birds could store and recover a tool so they could use it to find their food after a gap of 17 hours — something we wouldn’t expect them to do naturally. But they were able to instantly select the tool out of a number of unnecessary items.

In another experiment, the researchers taught crows to select a token(礼品券)from a number of items so that they could then exchange it for food. Again, the birds then showed that they could plan for the future using this new behaviour. This is different from all of the previous studies in future planning, which have focused on naturally occurring behaviour. For example, we know that chimpanzees select, transport and save appropriate tools for future needs.

These studies have shown that animals can plan for the future — but they leave an important question open for debate. Are animals only able to plan to use abilities that have evolved to give them a specific advantage, or can they flexibly and intelligently apply planning behaviour across various actions? Most critics would say the former, as the animals were tested in naturally occurring behaviour.

But the new research provides the first evidence that animal species can plan for the future using behaviour that doesn’t typically occur in nature. This supports the view that at least some recognitive(认知的)abilities in animals don’t evolve just in response to specific problems. Instead, it suggests that animals can apply these behaviour flexibly across problems in a similar way to humans. We need to study how flexible behaviour evolved. Then we might be able to see how crows’ ability to plan for the future fits in with their broader cognitive powers.

【小题1】What’s the new finding about some crows according to Paragraph 1?
A.They can store food.B.They can use tools to recover food.
C.They can store and recover tools.D.They can select and store food.
【小题2】What are crows trained by researchers to do when given a token?
A.Reject it casually.B.Exchange it for food.
C.Save it as their food.D.Build a nest with it.
【小题3】What can we infer about the studies that animals can plan for the future?
A.They are debatable.B.They are disappointing.
C.They are logical.D.They are convincing.
【小题4】What can be learned about flexible behaviour in animals?
A.It develops only with age.B.It is unclear how it evolved.
C.No animals but crows benefit from it.D.It helps plan for the future.

When Joshua Blue, a head teacher at the Kennedy, hosts a lecture for his students, he wears a light violet-colored tie. "You don't want so many bright colors that the kids will get distracted," said Blue. Colors give off very specific signals, and different tie colors stand for very different impacts. Wondering what color tie to wear to your next meeting? Here's how to choose the perfect color tie for every occasion:
All powerful reds
It's not a coincidence(巧合)that many politicians wear red-colored ties with light shirts and darker suits. "Red is the powerful color," said Mark Woodman, a trend analyst who studies color in Laurel, Maryland. "There’s something about red that always comes back to strength and passion.” But the tone of your reds matters, too. Darker reds can help build trust, while lighter red and pink ties can be more of a statement about your personal style and be associated with creativity. When you want to convey a sense of ambition, consider a shiny red.
Royal purples
Ross Znavor, an executive in financial services in New York, wears purple ties rather than red to business meetings because the color shows a bit of self-confidence and helps him create lasting first impressions. Purple, traditionally a sign of royalty and wealth is becoming more acceptable in the workplace.
Black affairs
"While you might not wear them to meetings on a regular basis, wearing black ties to a cocktail party or even a dinner is unique and attractive," said Zyla. But remember: the formal black color can feel aggressive in many situations. "Avoid it if you are a green-hand at work," Zyla said.
Right blues
Afraid of sending the wrong message with your tie color? Consider blue as the all-purpose tie. Blue ties are a good investment because the color reminds people of the sky and ocean. "Blue is the safest color to wear," Lindsay said.
【小题1】Why do many politicians prefer red-colored ties?
A.Because they often wear light shirts and darker suits.
B.Because they want to get promoted.
C.Because red is related to strength and passion.
D.Because red gets their message across easily.
【小题2】Who will probably choose the purple ties?
A.Politicians.B.Businessmen.
C.Artists.D.Head teachers.
【小题3】What color tie will you consider if you are a green-hand at work?
A.Red.B.Purple.
C.Black.D.Blue.
