Being overweight seems to be a national trouble. Diets, books on dieting, dieting organizations, and advice from doctors and health professionals do not seem to be enough. Millions of people have turned to dangerous drugs or harmful diets to stave off their hunger.

The meat industry and the fast-food restaurants have more to do with America’s weight problem than anything else. Each day we are filled with powerful TV and radio ads promoting (推销) the idea that it’s perfectly OK to have bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburgers and French fries for lunch. and fried chicken and French fries for supper.

Is there a healthy diet that people can use to lose weight and keep themselves slim and fit? There is indeed. A healthy diet-and-exercise regimen (养生之道) is actually pretty simple. That is to cut meat, fish, and milk products out of the picture completely (and I do mean completely).

* Do not eat any meat, fish, eggs, or milk products. No cheese, no ice cream, no pizza, and no butter.

* Eat only low-fat, and low-sugar foods. Eat fruit (in reasonable amounts) for desserts.

* As much as possible, avoid drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, or cola.

* Use soya drinks instead of milk. Soya drinks are high in protein and generally fairly low in fat.

* Eat cereals, grain, bread, and pasta in reasonable amounts (with no cheese, but always with high-protein foods).

* Jog or walk fast at least one mile per day. If you are unused to this level of exercise, start with smaller distances and build up to a mile.

It has been known for years that it is possible to get all the protein we need from high-protein vegetarian foods. Many restaurants now serve vegetable protein meals, such as veggie burgers or refried bean tacos and burritos; be sure to ask for them without cheese or sour cream!

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume(消耗) rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to(往往,倾向于) stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed(挤出) between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.

After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.

In spite of(尽管) all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or  extreme overweight — among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject(拒绝) older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.

同类题4

You wouldn't think of driving your car to work in the morning with an empty tank of gas, yet thousands of parents send their children off to school without any breakfast.

"After an overnight fast of eight to twelve hours, the brain needs fuel, "said Joan Carter, manager for the Children's Nutrition Research Center in Houston.

The body breaks down food to produce this fuel in the form of glucose(葡萄糖). Because glucose levels are associated with memory function, children can have difficulty focusing when they skip breakfast. Research shows that breakfast eaters tend to pay more attention to their teacher in class than those who rarely eat breakfast.

They tend to be more creative and better performers in school. They show more energy by late morning, have more strength and endurance, concentrate better, and are better at problem-solving. Children who are hungry can be slow or nervous during classroom activities or can appear disinterested when they have a difficult task to perform.

Researchers have also discovered that students who eat breakfast regularly tend to have better health overall.

They take in more vitamins and minerals, consume less fat and cholesterol(胆固醇), and may even have less chance of becoming overweight than breakfast-skippers. Without breakfast, it's difficult for children to get the nutrients they need throughout the day. Research shows that nutrients missed at breakfast aren't made up for at other meals.

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and there's no excuse for not eating breakfast," Dr. Carter said. A piece of bread and a glass of milk take little time to prepare. If you are trying to lose weight, skipping breakfast is also a big mistake. You will be tired and hungry by mid-morning. Then you'll want to eat a snack that isn't healthy.

Breakfast should provide at least 1/4 to 1/3 of a child's daily needs for vitamins, minerals and calories. A nutritious breakfast also provides the sugar, protein and fat they need because they are continuously growing and changing. Parents should set a good example for children. "You can't run out the door without eating breakfast, yet insist that your kids sit down and eat something," Dr. Carter said.

【小题4】How should parents teach children to have breakfast?
