On February 20, 2003, a fire broke out at the Station Club on Rhode Island. It 【小题1】 (kill) 100 people — mothers, fathers, sons and daughters. But as in any disaster （突难）, heroes were ready 【小题2】 (help).

One of those heroes is a man named James Paolucci. He is the owner of the Cowesett Inn（旅馆）, 【小题3】 is a comfortable place across from the station. On 【小题4】 (hear) the news that the club was on fire, James decided to do something to offer help. The inn turned 【小题5】 a hospital immediately. The injured got 【小题6】 (medicine) attention there, and Rhode Island officials held 【小题7】 (meeting) there. What’s more, the injured people’s family，firefighters, nurses stayed there.

James, efforts 【小题8】 (think) highly of by Governor Don Carcieri. In an article of the Kent County Daily Times, Carcieri stated, “The Cowesett Inn 【小题9】 (certain) helped the lifesaving work a lot that night. ”

James and 【小题10】 inn were all heroes in Rhode Island’s biggest disaster, and they saved a lot of lives.

   Ryan Hickman is only seven years old, but he’s already been saving for his college fund with profits he’s making from his recycling business.

When Ryan was three-and-a-half, he went with his dad to the local recycling center and made money from a few bags of cans and bottles. When he learned money can be made from that, Ryan decided recycling was his future.

“We had gone to the center with a couple of bags, and he really loved the actual act of putting all the cans and bottles into the machine and getting the money from it, and that kind of act got him hooked, ” described Damion Hickman, Ryan’s father.

Ryan told his parents that he wanted to give empty plastic bags to all the neighbors and hoped they would save their recyclables for him. Not only did the neighbors save their cans and bottles for Ryan but so did their co-workers, families, and friends. Soon after, Ryan started his own business, Ryan’s Recycling, and has since recycled over 200,000 cans and bottles. Every week, he and his family sort through bags of recyclables and they take them to the local recycling center where they are sorted and weighed.

So far, Ryan has saved more than $ 10,000 for college from his profits and he also sells T-shirts on his website and donates the profits to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach. “For the sea lions to get food and medicine,” he said.

Ryan has an important message for everyone, “If you already recycle, just keep on recycling. If you don’t recycle, start recycling.” Always a great businessman, Ryan added, “If you want to buy one of these T-shirts, it’s $ 13 on ryansreecycling.com.”

   Little Tommy was the pride and joy of his parents. He was a little boy, very bright and happy. So with no doubt his parents sent him to kindergarten, and it was certain that he would grow up very well.

At the end of the first week, Tommy brought home pictures he had coloured. His parents were a bit puzzled why his drawings were done in black crayon But they said nothing.

Another week passed and Tommy’s pictures were technically correct and well drawn for a 5-year-old but still in black. His parents thought, perhaps he was colour-blind（色盲的）. So they took him for a check-up.

The doctor told them not to worry. Tommy was healthy in every way. However，the pictures still came home in black. The teacher was contacted and she related that Tommy was the top of her class in everything, very well liked by all of the other children and showed no signs of any problems.

In kindergarten for a month, Tommy’s mother was anxious. She made an appointment with a child psychologist（心理学家）, who did a brain scan for Tommy. His character was well formed, and he was a precocious（超前的）learner. Perhaps he needed more challenging activities.

By Thanksgiving the fridge and various walls and doors of the family home had displayed Tommy’s black pictures, black dogs chasing a black ball in a black field, black houses, black suns, black airplanes, black turkeys, everything black.

Tommy’s grandmother was visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday and noticed all of the black drawings. She immediately asked Tommy, “Why are all of your drawings done in black crayon?”

To which he replied, “Because Grandma, by the time the crayon box gets down to my end of the table, there are only black crayons left.”

   My kids and I were heading into the supermarket over the weekend. On the way, we spotted a man holding a piece of paper that said, “_______ my job. Family to Feed.”

At this store, a _______ like this is not normal. My 10-year-old noticed him and make a _________ on how bad it must be to have to stand _________ in the cold wind.

In the store, I asked each of my kids to _______ something they thought our “friend” there would _________. They got apples, a sandwich and a bottle of juice. Then my 17-year-old suggested giving him a _________. I thought about it. We were _______ on cash ourselves, but… well, sometimes _______ from our need instead of our abundance is ________ what we need to do!
