Forget Cyclists, Pedestrians are Real Danger
We are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.
■Yes, many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders.
People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让) them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision.
The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.
——Michael Horan
■I love the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists (Viewpoints, May 29). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.
I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.
The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used.
The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!
The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent (发荧光的) jacket and lights at night and in the morning they should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.
——Carol Harvey
■Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along the pavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.
I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.
Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists?
It's about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be treated and there might be an opportunity to claim.
——JML

Forty percent of teens say they have been hit or nearly hit by a car, motorcycle or bike while walking, according to a new report released by the Safe Kids Worldwide organization.

Safe Kids Delaware has released a list of safety tips children and teens should follow in order to remain safe while walking. The group said it is important to put down phones and remove headphones while crossing the street, make eye contact with drivers before crossing, and remain visible to drivers even in the dark.

"We all know about the dangers of distracted(思想不集中的)driving, but we need to talk to our children, especially teens, about the dangers of walking while they are distracted by using technology like listening to music with headphones on,and texting on cellphones,"said Kim O'Malley, the pedestrian(行人)safety conductor for Safe Kids Delaware.

Teens on the Moue is the name of the report, which explores the walking behavior of  1,040 teenagers between the ages of 13 to 19.Half of the surveyed teens admitted they were distracted by a mobile device while crossing the street. The study also found that more often than not, those who were hit or nearly hit had not been using a crosswalk(人行横道)or had been running across the street.

Safe Kids Worldwide reports that the death rate for teens aged 13 to 19 is nearly three times higher than that of 5-to 12-year-olds.In Delaware, seven teenagers aged 15 to 19 have been killed in pedestrian crashes in the last three years, and another 123 have been injured. By comparison, just two children aged 5 to 9 were killed at that time and another 79 were injured. The new report expands on findings from a similar one in 2015 that showed one in five high schoolers and one in eight middle schoolers crossed the street while distracted by using technology.

"Which college are you going to?"Many high school students are often asked this question. For some, the answer is Harvard,Stanford,Princeton or another famous university. For others,it might be State U,a small liberal arts college or even a community college. Whether high school students' answer is a private top college or a large public university,it should be their best-fit choice.

Admission rates(录取率)of some of the country's top universities have been dropping for years up to now, with many admitting less than 10 percent of applicants. This makes these colleges all the more desirable to some applicants because they think being admitted to one of these highly selective colleges makes sure of success.

The truth is that the name brand doesn't make a college a good choice for you. Just ask one of the students who were admitted to all eight Ivy League colleges this year. He turned them all down to attend the University of Alabama, which best met his financial and academic needs.

Just like anything else in life, when something is a good fit,it works. Students that attend colleges that match their academic, social and financial needs, while still providing an academically challenging environment, are more likely to graduate on time. On the other hand, students who attend colleges that are not a good fit are more likely.to struggle, feel anxiety and stress, and fail to get out in four years. In fact, some of the colleges with the highest graduation rates aren't in the Ivy League.

It's a good fit that leads to good results — not the name of a school. Just look at some of the colleges with the highest starting salaries. Colleges like Montana Tech and Oregon Health & Science University are among the top 10 colleges with the highest early-career salaries-with Stanford and the Ivy Leagues only making the top 25.

No single college is going to be a great fit for every student, and this especially applies(适用)to the Ivy Leagues and other well-known colleges. That a college just has a famous name doesn't mean it's going to make sure of success in college or your career.

【小题1】What is suggested in the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A.Universities admit fewer and fewer students now.
B.It's more challenging for students to enter top universities now.
C.It's more challenging for top universities to admit students now.
D.Some universities can admit just 10% of the students they should do.
【小题2】What can we know from the passage?
A.State U is going to be among the famous universities.
B.Many students feel honored to be admitted to a highly selective college.
C.Something that is a good fit might not work well.
D.The Ivy Leagues have lost their positions compared with other colleges.
【小题3】Montana Tech is used as one of the examples to show that ________.
A.not-so-famous colleges can also bring high early-career salaries
B.many students attend it because it can bring them good results
C.no single college is going to be a great fit for every student
D.top colleges are able to provide more competitive graduates
【小题4】What does the author mainly want to show?
A.Well-known colleges are famous for some reasons.
B.Many students aren't good at choosing a college.
C.Students should go to colleges that fit them best.
D.Students should choose a college with high admission rates.

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand different.

According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the "dream job" of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or "vlogger". The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as many as 40 percent of them put vloggers as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.

This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.

In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting(交流)with their fans about everyday life.

However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame(名声)and fortune. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.

Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don't necessarily earn them fame, but that allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the

Finishers Club. It's an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that's enough for him.

One of the main challenges facing many countries is how to maintain their identity in the face of globalization and the growing multi-language trend. "One of the main reasons for economic failure in many African countries is the fact that, with a few important exceptions, mother-tongue education is not practiced in any of the independent African states." said Neville Alexander, Director of the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.

In response to the spread of English and the increased multi-language trends arising from immigration, many countries have introduced language laws in the last decade. In some, the use of languages other than the national language is banned in public spaces such as advertising posters. One of the first such legal provisions(规定) was the 1994 "Toubon law" in France, and the idea has been copied in many countries since then. Such efforts to govern language use are often considered as futile by language experts, who are well aware of the difficulty in controlling fashions in speech and know from research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process.

It is especially difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the "purity" of a language by law. Since the time of Shakespeare, English has continually absorbed foreign words into its own language. English is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world, but that has not been a barrier to acquiring superiority and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of the state regulation is that it has never been the Anglo-Saxon way of doing things. English has never had a state-controlled authority for the language, similar, for example, to the Academic Francaise in France.

The need to protect national languages is, for most western Europeans, a recent phenomenon-------especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessarily take over too many fields. Public communication, education and new ways of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields to defend.
