In the town of Boone,8 years ago this summer,a Chick-fil-A was built and all the parents and children were delighted to have a place with great food and a wonderful indoor playground. But there was one little girl who couldn't enjoy the food because her treatments made all food tasteless. She was most disappointed, however, that she was not able to play on the new playground that she saw so often on the way to the doctor's office. This was because her immune system(免疫系统)was nearly non-existent,and her parents and doctors were concerned that she might pick up a bad germ(病菌).

One day when she was at the doctor's office, the manager of Chick-fil-A,who happened to be the husband of her favorite nurse and was bringing her lunch, knelt down before the little girl and asked her if she had been to the new place to play. The little girl sadly explained her health issues and the reason for her absence. The man held her and cried with her.

The next day,the little girl received a phone call from the man to meet him in the parking lot on Sunday. The girl's mom said,"I thought you are closed on Sundays." He said,"We do,but I have a surprise for your little girl. Oh,make sure she has play clothes and bring her best friend."

That Sunday, the little girl, her mom and dad,her best friend and her mom went to Chick-fil-A. The manager locked the door behind them, and disinfected(消毒)the entire play area from top to bottom twice. He served them cold fountain drinks and ice cream, and then played with the little girls until they could play no longer.

I know this story to be true because the little girl is my daughter, Makala. She will never forget the sacrifice and kindness of the manager. She will forever love him, and now that she is cancer-free, Chick-fil-A has the best chicken in her opinion.

In October 2013, Davion Only made an appeal on the Internet. He had learned that his biological mother had died not long before. ”My name is Davion and I've been in foster care (寄养照管) since I was born," he said, “but I'm not giving up hope. "
The heartbreaking appeal spread quickly, and Only's foster agency received calls from more than 10,000 people. Only ended up travelling to Ohio to live with a family. But after Only got into a physical fight with one of his elder would-be brothers, the family changed their minds.
Back in Florida, Only passed through four different temporary homes over the following year, until he called Connie Going, his adoption case worker, to make a special request. Only had known Going for nearly ten years, and had asked every year if she would adopt him, but she always hesitated. “I always believed there was a better family than us out there," Going said in an interview. But last July, when Only called and asked again if she might adopt him, Going said something felt different. "When he asked me, my heart felt this ache and I just
knew he was my son," she said.
So Going, 52, invited Only to start spending time with the rest of her family-her two daughters, Sydney, 21, and Carly 17, and a son Taylor, 14, who she also adopted out of foster care.  Eventually, after seeing how well the arrangement was working, Going, who had rented a bigger home, started adopting Only. Only moved in with her family last December. He officially joined Going's family on April 22, 2015 when the adoption papers went through.
"Today, I feel blessed and honored to have been chosen to be the parent of all my children," Going said.

I was one of the young US soldiers in Saudi Arabia. At one time before the Internet, our only lifeline to friends and family was the mail we sent and received.

One evening the mail soldier called my name and, instead of a letter, handed me a large box from my grandmother in Oklahoma. One of the great hardships of the war for me was the absence of my grandmother's cooking—her fried chicken and onion, corn bread, and, most of all,her desserts. But on that evening I was about to take a gastronomic(美食的) journey home: I opened the box and found two dozen pies made by my grandmother.

A man from New York approached and asked me what I had received. I couldn't answer;my mouth was full of pie. So I just offered him one. “So nice!”he said. “What are they?”He had to wait a few moments for an answer, but eventually I explained. As insurance,I offered him another pie to keep him quiet.

Once a day for the next three weeks,I imagined returning home to my grandmother's kitchen,if only I had had a few sweet bites at a time.

Some of my earliest memories are associated with my grandmother's pies. She had been baking pies since before the Great Depression. She would have astonished the judges on today's TV cooking challenges. I remember coming across a persimmon(柿子)tree once while out hiking. It was autumn, and the fruit was soft and sweet. I picked a few dozen and brought them to Grandma. Guess what! The next day I walked into her kitchen to find a persimmon pie waiting for me.
