Could cities that float on the sea solve the problems caused by floods and provide food for the world?

Some scientists think so. The idea is already being tested and they believe that floating cities will provide more homes for a growing population, without having to use land needed to grow food. And they believe floating areas will allow more food to be grown, so that no one in the world is in hunger.

In some places, cities that float on the sea are already being planned. A company in the Netherlands called DeltaSync thinks that sea cities will save the world, with more than one in ten people living in them.

They say sea cities can solve many of the problems the world faces in the 21st century, like not having enough land, more and more people needing homes, fossil fuels (矿物燃科) running low and the increasingly serious problems caused by floods.

DeltaSync says building in the desert is not possible because there is no enough water and that developing ways for people to live in space is still too expensive. So they believe the answer is our oceans, which cover over two-thirds of the Earth’s surface. Their plans for floating areas include using algae (藻类) to produce fuels and food.

More than a quarter of the land in the Netherlands already lies underwater and scientists there have spent years trying to find ways to deal with it. In the city of Rotterdam they already have floating homes.

Bart Roeffen from DeltaSync says, “We have plans for neighborhoods including roads and, in the end, I believe we can build floating cities on the sea.”

Trekking (徒步旅行) 500 miles across Spain is no easy task for anyone, but for the wheelchair user Justin Skeesuck, achieving the dream seemed nearly impossible. However, Skeesuck’s lifelong best friend, Patrick Gray, simply didn’t accept that idea. He said, “We’ve done everything together so far. Why don’t we have one more adventure?”

That’s exactly what he did — pushing Skeesuck across northern Spain’s Camino de Santiago. Though Skeesuck has a muscle disease similar to ALS (肌萎缩侧索硬化) and high blood pressure, he first got the idea to go on the journey after he watched a travel show about the trail. He said, “I knew immediately since my heart was just telling me, ‘You need to do this.’”

With Gray on board and the blessings of their family, the two best friends from Idaho set off to make Skeesuck’s dream of going for the journey a reality. However, neither Gray nor Skeesuck realized how physically and emotionally arduous the trip would be. Not only did they have a strict time limit — about six weeks to get from start to finish, but they also faced extremely difficult obstacles (障碍). With Gray pushing Skeesuck in a three-wheel wheelchair, the pair crossed mountains, rivers and a desert. “I’ve never been that physically exhausted in my entire life,” Gray said. The pair came across countless kind people during their trip who were eager to help them finish their journey, but they refused their help with gentle words. 34 days later, the two best friends finished their journey, realizing a dream that helped them learn about themselves and others. “The adventure has taught me for sure that when you do something with faith, and never give up, amazing things can really happen,” Skeesuck said.

Gray recorded their incredible trip in a book — “I’ll Push You: A Journey of 500 Miles, Two Best Friends and One Wheelchair”, which would be published soon. Skeesuck and Gray are also working on a children’s book that will tell the story of their adventure. They hope that the book will give kids strength when they deal with difficulties.

【小题1】What can we learn about Patrick Gray from Paragraph 1?
A.He is a wheelchair user.
B.He has been to Spain several times before.
C.He wanted to challenge what was thought impossible.
D.He didn’t think trekking 500 miles was an adventure.
【小题2】What does the underlined word “arduous” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Relaxing.B.Disappointing.
C.Challenging.D.Satisfying.
【小题3】What can we infer about the pair’s journey from Paragraph 3?
A.They set off on foot.B.They finished it ahead of time.
C.They received a lot of help.D.They met with no difficulties.
【小题4】Why did the two friends write a children’s book on that journey?
A.To encourage kids to face difficulties bravely.
B.To earn some money by selling books.

The sea is home to billions of plants and animals. Many live only near the sunlit surface. Oceanographers sort marine (海洋的) living beings by dividing them into two main groups: plants and animals.

There are two general types of plants found in the ocean, those having roots that grow in the ocean bottom and those not having roots which simply float around with water. The rooted plants in the ocean are only found in shallow waters because there is not enough sunlight to maintain photosynthesis (光合作用) in deeper waters. Since sunlight does not pass more than a few hundred feet into the ocean, most of the ocean is unable to support rooted plants.

The most plants in the ocean are known as phytoplankton (浮游植物群落) . These are usually single-celled, small floating plants that float throughout the surface waters of the ocean. To grow, phytoplankton need nutrients from the sea water and lots of sunlight.

Marine animals are divided into three groups: zooplankton, nekton, and benthos. Zooplankton are floating animals and are usually small; however, they can grow to fairly large size. The jellyfish and the Portuguese man-of-war are examples of larger types of zooplankton which are unable to move themselves effectively.

Nekton are the free swimmers and probably the largest part of familiar animals found in the ocean belong to this class. Common fishes, octopuses, whales, eels and squid are all examples of nekton.

The third type of sea animals spends their entire life on the bottom of the ocean. This group of marine animals is called benthos. Some of these creatures, such as lobsters and snails, may be able to move about on the bottom but their lifestyle is so closely linked with the ocean floor that they are unable to survive away from this environment.

【小题1】What does the text mainly introduce?
A.Marine plants and marine animals.B.Two types of sea plants.
C.Three kinds of sea animals.D.Small and big animals in the ocean.
【小题2】Why can’t we find the rooted plants in deep waters of the ocean?
A.Because there are too many rocks at the bottom of the ocean.
B.Because the rooted plants can’t stand the coldness of the ocean.
C.Because there is not enough sunlight for them in deep waters.
D.Because the rooted plants need more sunlight than plants which have no roots.
【小题3】One of the characteristics of zooplankton is that __________ .
A.they are small and never grow to large size
B.some of the zooplankton can’t swim quickly
C.they can swim freely in deep waters of the ocean
D.they need more sunlight than other animals in the ocean
【小题4】According to the last paragraph, we can conclude that __________ .
A.benthos live on the surface of the ocean water
B.some of the benthos can’t live without the ocean floor
C.benthos spend most of their time swimming in the ocean
D.benthos can move about in the middle of the sea water

You’ve got the part, so you must be able to act! There are some classic acting strategies that you’ll need to nail down (确定) to wow the crowds. Are you ready for your first Oscar?

Read over the play. Before you begin acting, at least read through a few scenes to get the feel of what the play is about. Figure out the genre (体裁) , and who are the character. 【小题1】

Get into the character. Now that you know more about the character, get in their shoes. If you can, tell your friends about it, and practice having a conversation or doing things as if you were the character. Talk like they would, walk like they would, watch the shows they would, and do the things they would. 【小题2】

【小题3】Stand up, memorize a couple of lines and practice moving with them. If the play doesn’t tell you what actions to do, do what you think the character would do. You are now the character. If he would hold his head while screaming, do that! Do what needs to be done.

Memorize your lines. 【小题4】 During practice, you want to make sure you work more on your acting than just reading off the book. If you are reading, your hands and eyes are occupied, so learn ahead of time.

Act and Learn. Be confident, whatever your character is supposed to be. If you must, practice being in the character an hour before the show. 【小题5】 Unless it is a one-man show, listen to their input. They may have better ideas and even ways to improve your actions. Take this to heart. If you must, ask multiple people what you should do.

Last week, I have the honor of experiencing teaching. Our school asked some volunteer to teach some kids which lived in the countryside.

I treasured this chance so much and joined in the team. When I met those kids, they were so happily to see me and listened to me carefully. Given the warmest welcome by them, I enjoyed being their teacher. However, I tried my best to teach them and play games with them.

Back to school, I missed our students so much. They liked me a lot but some of them even kept in the touch with me. I felt so proud being a teacher. This precious experience helped me make up my mind to realizing my dream.
