Reading may be your favorite hobby. But have you counted how many words you read in a year? Middle school students at Andersen Junior High School in U.S. are asked to count.
Last year, Chris Hales, a teacher at Andersen, set a new word-counting project to help his students learn better reading habits. All of the kids at Andersen should read 1 billion words in a school year.
Last school year, they did it. This term, Hales encourages his students to read 1.5 billion words. “If all of the kids can read a book a week, we’ll reach 1.5 billion.”
Hales believes his students can do it. “Because we have two secrets to success,” Hales said. “The first is giving students books they want to read.” There are 6 to 15 copies of such books in the school library.
The second is to set up a word-counting scoreboard(计分板). The rankings(排行榜)of the top-reading students are shown on a monitor in the school library. This encourages students to move up the ranks with their reading.
“It’s great to come in here and tell friends to look at your name on the monitor,” said Vanessa, an eighth-grader who read 5 million words last year and finished 20 books over summer holidays.
The 1.5-billion-word challenge has helped to build reading habits that will stay with many students long after they have graduated junior high.
“I’ve really grown to love it,” said Julia, who read 3 million words last year . “I’m going to be an old lady sitting in a chair, always reading a book.”
