Though Hurricane(飓风) Katrina may have deeply damaged the city, New Orleans still knows how to throw a party. The Mardi Gras Carnival, which ended on February 28, helped serve as a reminder of the city’s spirit and culture even after the wake of the natural disasters(灾难) last September.
Locals and tourists alike celebrated Mardi Gras season, which officially begins 12 days after Christmas. Originally a French holiday that celebrates the weeks after Jesus Christ’s birth, “Mardi Gras”, meaning “Fat Tuesday” in French, has now become well known for fun and food found in the Big Easy ( one of New Orleans’ nicknames ). With the streets decorated in the festival’s traditional purple, green, and gold, New Orleans famous French Quarter was blocked off to allow the colorful floats to parade down the streets.
Despite(不管) the festive atmosphere, signs of the hurricane were everywhere. Fewer people came to the parades than in other years, which was not unexpected considering that half of the city’s population has not returned and that one-third of the city’s hotels were closed. Further signs of the hurricane could be seen in the choice of clothes:some people dressed as sandbags or tarps(防水布).
Recovery efforts still have a long way to go, but New Orleans’ mayor Ray Nagin still has hope and told the Associated Press, “Katrina did a lot of bad things. But it has done something to give New Orleanians a fresh love for their city.”
