Do you love cockroaches(蟑螂)? Now the insect could become man's new best friend. It sounds like something from a movie, but a team of scientists are making a success of live remote-controlled(远程控制的)cockroaches.(A)They can be used to gather information from places no humans could reach.
After years of hard work, Texas engineers have created an insect cyborg(半机械人)by using a live cockroach which carries a mini-computer. The computer is wired into a nervous system, meaning a human operator can push buttons to(B)_________ where it goes.
Hong Liang, research project leader at Texas A&M University, said the cyborg insect could carry tiny video cameras, microphones or other equipment to record information from small pipes, or even collapsed(倒塌的)buildings to find earthquake survivors(幸存者).
He said,"Insects can do things that a robot can't. They can go into small places, sense the environment, and if there's movement, from predator say, they can escape much better than a system designed by a human."
"We wanted to find ways to work with cockroaches." They are usually classed as vermin(害虫)and a restaurant owner's worst nightmare(噩梦). (C)However, by working with the insects for long, Mr. Liang soon became fond of them, feeding them dog food and water.
The experiment has not been well-received across all quarters of the science community(团体).The insects can carry five times their weight, but do feel tired with the extra burden(负担).
