    沈从文在谈及《边城》创作动机时曾说:“我要表现的本是一种‘人生的形式’,一种‘优美、健康而又不悖乎人性的人生形式’。”准确理解这段话是把握《边城》内蕴的一条重要线索。多数评论者在立论时往往对“不悖乎人性”视而不见,而只抓住“优美”、“健康”等亮丽的词以及作品所显现出来的美丽光环,得出《边城》所要表现的是一种“理想的人生形式”,所要赞颂的是“人性美”等论断。其实,在沈从文的社会思想和美学思想中,“人性”是一个极重要的概念,是统领其小说内容的灵魂,正如作者所说:“我只想造希腊小庙……这神庙供奉的是‘人性’。”他的“人性”的内涵也不仅仅是多数论者所理解的“美的人性”,而是一种“金子与沙子并存”的客观实在。作品所要表现的人生形式虽具有理想的特点,但并没有完全理想化,而是一种现实的自由自在的人生形式---自然、美好而又杂有“沙子”的人生形式。

    当然,仅仅根据创作来探讨作品的内蕴是不够的,诚如劳伦斯所说:“永远不要相信艺术家,而要相信他笔下的故事。批评家的作用在于从创作故事的艺术家手中拯救故事。”批评的关键是以作品为依据,透过作品所提供的人生视景、特别是人物的性格心理等挖掘其内蕴。不可否认,《边城》以大量的篇幅对湘西人性美进行热情的描绘和讴歌,从而体现作家对“理想的人生形式”、对生命自由的追求,但这毕竟只是作家的美好意愿,不能代表作品的全部内蕴。事实是,《边城》的结尾是个出人意料的变奏,一个特定的结局,却也是现实意义上的悲剧。诚如多数评论者所说,这个悲剧显示了人生在生命瞬间的不确定性。但这并不是作品的最终指归。这种不确定性既是偶然事件所致,也是主观的人为因素所致,即人物不自觉地、无意为之所产生的破坏性行为。作品故事的主干及结局旨在通过这种“命运的不确定性”,揭露美好人性的阴暗面---深潜于民族心灵的痼疾。正是这种痼疾,在关键时刻兴风作浪,最终成为主宰人物命运的因素。沈从文是明了全部事变中的悲剧因素的,但他对“人性向善的发展”的追求,又使其不忍心痛揭人性的阴暗面,他渴望笔下的小儿女能够获得一份合理的人生安排,因此不惜花费大量笔墨来表现人性美的一面。

    湘西的人生是沈从文小说着力表现的重要部分,对于下层人民,沈从文侧重表现蕴藏在他们身上的勤劳、勇敢、正直、善良而又纯朴的品德,努力挖掘他们身上的人性美,并在他们身上寄托着重塑民族品格的理想。他发掘了湘西乡村社会人性的金子,同时深谙这种处于原始自在状态的人性所具有的迷信、愚昧的缺陷。这种缺陷是美好人性的阴暗面,具有不可忽视的破坏性作用。当它发作时,势必破坏人们自由自在的和谐状态,成为“人与自然契合”的阻力。《边城》的爱情悲剧正是这种缺陷作用的结果。至此,《边城》的内蕴所呈现出来的就不是单一的“证明人性皆善”或揭露人性的阴暗面。
