        余读书之室,其旁有桂一株焉,桂之上日有啁啾者,即(1)而视之,则二鸟巢于其枝干之间,去地不五六尺,人手能及之。巢大如盏,精密完固,细草盘结而成。鸟雌一雄一,小不能盈掬(2),色明洁,娟皎可爱,不知其何鸟也。
        雏且出矣,雌者覆翼之,雄者往取食。每得食,辄息于屋上,不即下。主人戏以手撼其巢,则下瞰而鸣,小撼之小鸣,大撼之即大鸣,手下,鸣乃已。
        他日,余从外来,见巢坠于地,觅二鸟及鵱鷇(3),无有。问之,则某氏僮奴取以去。
        嗟乎!以此鸟之羽毛洁而音鸣好也,奚(4)不深山之适(5)而茂林之栖?乃托身非所,见辱于人奴以死,彼其以世路为甚宽也哉?
      【注释】(1)即:走近,靠近(2)掬:用手捧,盈掬:这里指用手满握。(3)鵱:音构,鸟卵。这里指幼鸟。(4)奚:为什么。(5)适:到……去

    Cowboys played an important role in the settling of the west. Ranching (牧场经营)was a big industry and cowboys helped to run the ranches.____

The Roundup

Clothing

    Cowboys wore special clothing that helped them with their jobs. They wore large 10-gallon hats to protect them from the sun and the rain. They wore special cowboy boots that helped them to get in and out of the stirrups (马镫)when riding a horse____ Many cowboys wore chaps on the outsides of their legs to help protect them from sharp bushes that their horse may rub up against.

Cowboy Code

    ____ The code included such rules as being polite and respectful, always saying “howdy”, not waving at a man on a horse (you should nod) , never riding another man's horse without his permission,always helping someone in need, and never putting on another man's hat.
