1979年12月27日,苏联派遣8万多人的现代化军队,大举侵入阿富汗,占领了阿富汗首都喀布尔,处死了当时的阿富汗***阿明,并扶植卡尔迈勒组成了亲苏政权。阿富汗反对派武装奋起抵抗,展开了长期的抗苏斗争。1981年,其中的几个抵抗组织联合成立了阿富汗圣战者伊斯兰联盟,并开始接受美国、巴基斯坦、沙特阿拉伯和埃及等国的军事援助,在全国以及周边伊朗和巴基斯坦等邻国开展抵抗苏军入侵的斗争。苏军入侵阿富汗,遭到了世界大多数国家的强烈谴责。1980年1月,联合国第六届特别会议通过了《要求外国军队无条件和全部撤出阿富汗》的决议。1986年2月,在阿富汗反对武装的顽强抵抗和世界舆论的强烈谴责下,苏联被迫表示,愿意政治解决阿富汗问题。1989年2月15日,苏军全部撤出了阿富汗。这场战争给阿、苏两国人民带来深重灾难。阿富汗有130多万人丧生,500多万人流亡国外沦为难民;苏联先后有150多万官兵在阿富汗作战,累计伤亡5万余人,耗资450亿卢布。
