      ①读什么书,取决于为什么读。人之所以读书,无非有三种目的。一是为了实际的用途,例如因为职业的需要而读专业书籍,因为日常生活的需要而读实用知识。二是为了消遣,用读书来消磨时光,可供选择的有各种无用而有趣的读物。三是为了获得精神上的启迪和享受,如果是出于这个目的,我觉得读人文经典是最佳选择。
      ②认真地说,并不是随便读点什么都能算是阅读的。譬如说,我不认为背功课或者读时尚杂志是阅读。真正的阅读必须有灵魂的参与,它是一个人的灵魂在一个借文字符号构筑的精神世界里的漫游,是在这漫游途中的自我发现和自我成长,因而是一种个人化的精神行为。什么样的书最适合于这样的精神漫游呢?当然是经典,只要我们翻开它们,便会发现里面藏着一个个既独特又完整的精神世界。
      ③一个人如果并无精神上的需要,读什么倒是无所谓的,否则就必须慎于选择。也许没有一个时代拥有像今天这样多的出版物,然而,很可能今天的人们比以往任何时候都阅读得少。在这样的时代,一个人尤其必须懂得拒绝和排除,才能够进入真正的阅读。这是我主张坚决不读二三流乃至不入流读物的理由。
      ④古往今来,书籍无数,没有人能够单凭一己之力从中筛选出最好的作品来。幸亏我们有时间这位批评家,虽然它也未必绝对智慧和公正,但很可能是一切批评家中最智慧和最公正的一位,多么独立思考的读者也不妨听一听它的建议。所谓经典,就是时间这位批评家向我们提供的建议。
      ⑤作为普通人,我们如何读经典?我的经验是,不妨就把经典当作闲书来读。也就是说,阅读的心态和方式都应该是轻松的。千万不要端起做学问的架子,刻意求解。读不懂不要硬读,先读那些读得懂的、能够引起自己兴趣的著作和章节。这里有一个浸染和熏陶的过程,所谓人文修养就是这样熏染出来的。在不实用而有趣这一点上,读经典的确很像是一种消遣。事实上,许多心智活泼的人正是把这当作最好的消遣的。能否从阅读经典中感受到精神的极大愉悦,这差不多是对心智质量的一种检验。不过,也请记住,经典虽然属于每一个人,但永远不属于大众。我的意思是说,读经典的轻松绝对不同于读大众时尚读物的那种轻松。每一个人只能作为有灵魂的个人,而不是作为无个性的大众,才能走到经典中去。如果有一天你也陶醉于阅读经典这种美妙的消遣,你就会发现,你已经距离一切大众娱乐性质的消遣多么遥远。
