    元和中，累擢给事中。俄为同州刺史。既谢，帝逮问政事，所对详诣。明日，谓宰相曰：“元膺直气谠言，宜留左右，奈何出之？”李藩、裴垍谢，因言：“陛下及此，乃宗社无疆之休。臣等昧死，请留元膺给事左右。”未几，兼皇太子侍读，进御史中丞。拜鄂岳观察使。尝夜登城守者不许左右曰中丞也对曰夜不可辨乃还明日擢守者为大将。
