太学生何番传

韩愈

    太学生何蕃入太学者廿余年矣。岁举进士，学成行尊，自太学诸生推颂不敢与蕃齿，相与言于助教、博士^①，助教、博士以状申于司业、祭酒^②，司业、祭酒撰次蕃之群行焯焯者数十余事，以之升于礼部，而以闻于天子。京师诸生以荐蕃名文说者，不可迭纪。公卿大夫知蕃者比肩立，莫为礼部；为礼部者，率蕃所不合者，以是无成功。

    蕃，淮南人，父母具全。初入太学，岁率一归，父母止之。其后间一二岁乃一归，又止之，不归者五岁矣。蕃，纯孝人也，闵亲之老不自克，一日，揖诸生归养于和州，诸生不能止，乃闭蕃空舍中。于是太学六馆之士百余人，又以蕃之义行，言于司业阳先生城，请谕留蕃。于是太学阙祭酒，会阳先生出道州，不果留。

    欧阳詹生言曰：“蕃，仁勇人也。”或者曰：“蕃居太学诸生不为非义葬死者之无归哀其孤而字焉惠之大小必以力复斯其所谓仁欤！蕃之力不任其体，其貌不任其心，吾不知其勇也。”欧阳詹生曰：“朱之乱^③，太学诸生举将从之，来请起蕃，蕃正色叱之，六馆之士不从乱，兹非其勇欤!”

    惜乎!蕃之居下，其可以施于人者不流也。譬之水，其为泽，不为川乎?川者高，泽者卑，高者流，卑者止。是故蕃之仁义，充诸心，行诸太学，积者多，施者不遐也。天将雨，水气上，无择于川泽涧溪之高下，然则泽之道，其亦有施乎！抑有待于彼者欤！故凡贫贱之士，必有待然后能有所立，独何蕃欤！吾是以言之，无使其无传焉。

Having good manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. ____ At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended. It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don't ask such questions.
