        陶侃字士行，本鄱阳人也。徙家庐江之寻阳。侃早孤贫，为县吏。庐江太守张夔召为督邮，有能名，迁主簿。夔妻有疾，将迎医于数百里。时正寒雪，诸纲纪^①皆难之，侃乃请行，众咸服其义。

        迁武昌太守，左转广州刺史。侃在州无事，辄朝运百甓^②于斋外，暮运于斋内。人问其故，答曰：“吾方致力中原，过尔优逸，恐不堪事。”其励志勤力，皆此类也。

        迁都督荆、雍、盖、梁州诸军事。侃性聪敏，勤于吏职。终日敛膝危坐阃外^③多事千绪万端罔有遗漏远近书疏莫不手答，笔翰如流，未尝壅滞。常语人曰：“大禹圣者，乃惜寸阴，至于众人，当惜分阴，岂可逸游荒醉，生无益于时，死无闻于后，是自弃也。”诸参佐或以谈戏废事者，乃命取其酒器、蒱博之具，悉投之于江，吏将则加鞭扑，曰：“樗蒱^④者，牧猪奴^⑤戏耳！老庄浮华，非先王之法言，不可行也。君子当正其衣冠，摄其威仪，何有乱头养望^⑥自谓宏达邪！”有奉馈者，皆问其所由。若力作所致，虽微必喜，慰赐参倍；若非理得之，则切厉呵辱，还其所馈。尝出游，见人持一把未熟稻，侃问：“用此何为？”人云：“行道所见，聊取之耳。”侃大怒曰：“汝既不田，而戏贼人稻！”执而鞭之。是以百姓勤于农殖，家给人足。
