韩愈

    使至,辱足下书,欢愧来并,不容于心。嗟乎!子之言意皆是也。仆虽巧说,何能逃其责耶?然皆子之爱我多,重我厚,不时人待我之情,而以子之待我之意,使我望于时人也。

    仆之家本穷空,重遇攻劫,衣服无所得,养生之具无所有,家累仅三十口,携此将安所归托乎?舍之入京,不可也,挈之而行,不可也,足下将安以为我谋哉?此一事耳,足下谓我入京城,有所益乎?仆之有子,犹有不知者,时人能知我哉?持仆所守,驱而使奔走伺候公卿间,开口论议,其安能有以合乎?仆在京城八九年,无所取资,日求于人以度时月,当时行之不觉也,今而思之,如痛定之人思当痛之时,不知何能自处也。今年加长矣,复驱之使就其故地,是亦难矣。所贵乎京师者,不以明天子在上,贤公卿在下,布衣韦带之士谈道义者多乎?以仆遑遑于其中,能上闻而下达乎?其知我者固少,知而相爱不相忌者又加少。内无所资,外无所从,终安所为乎?

    嗟乎!子之责我诚也,爱我诚多也,今天下之人,有如子者乎?自尧舜以来,士有不遇者乎?无也?子独安能使我洁清不洿,而处其所可乐哉?非不愿为子之所云者,力不足、势不便故也。仆于此岂以为大相知乎?累累随行,役役逐队,饥而食,饱而嬉者也。其所以止而不去者,以其心诚有爱于仆也。然所爱于我者少,不知我者犹多,吾岂乐于此乎哉?将亦有所而求息于此也。

    嗟乎!子诚爱我矣,子之所责于我者诚是矣,然恐子有时不暇责我而悲我,不暇悲我而自责且自悲也。及之而后知,之而后难耳。孔子称颜回:“一箪食、一瓢饮,人不堪其忧,回也不改其乐。”彼人者,有圣者为之依归,而又有箪食瓢饮足以不死,其不忧而乐也,岂不易哉!若仆无所依归,无箪食,无瓢饮,无所取资,则饿而死,其不亦难乎?子之闻我言亦悲矣。

    嗟乎,子亦慎其所之哉!离违久,乍还侍左右,当日欢喜,故专使驰此,候足下意,并以自解。愈再拜。

    As humans, we have the natural tendency (倾向、偏好)to compare ourselves with others with the hope of attaining satisfaction. Actually, this kind of activity does not help you feel to be more grateful in life.____! You will always be meeting someone richer, which makes you fed inferior (下等的) to others!
