    中国是瓷器的故乡,瓷器是古代劳动人民的一个重要的创造。明人谢肇制在《五杂俎》中记载:“今俗语窑器谓之磁器者,盖磁州窑最多,故相延名之,如银称米提,墨称腴糜之类也。”当时出现的以“磁器”代窑器是由磁州窑产量最多所致。这是迄今发现最早使用瓷器(即“磁器”)称谓的史料。

    考古学证明,瓷器起于夏、商,成于战国两汉,从唐开始,文献中开始出现“越窑”“邢窑”等窑口名称。两宋时,农业生产、城市发展、工商经济、科学技术、教育出版、文学艺术、国际贸易等呈现出惊人进步,考古发现的“宋瓷”正是在这种时代背景下展现了宋代文化的特质。

    宋瓷主体可分为十大窑系,相关窑口有百个以上。“窑口”是中国传统的瓷业命名方法,强调地域性和特色性的统一;“窑系”是考古类型学思想指导下的产物,强调不同地域的瓷业在特色性方面的彼此关联性、互动性。以窑口而论,“百花齐放”才是大美,“一枝独秀”是文化衰弱之表现。故就中华瓷史而论,两宋瓷业窑口“空前绝后”非为虚言。同时,两宋时代,不仅窑口众多,而且名窑辈出,各擅其能。

    宋代陶瓷业中的不同窑系甚至同一窑系的不同窑口、窑厂,都发育出自己的工艺体系,在印花、刻花、铭刻及釉装饰等各方面都创造出至高的水平。宋代几乎各个窑系或窑口的工艺内容犹如两宋书画词章一般美不胜收,展现了中国不同地域的民众各具风情和特色的文化创造力、审美力和表现力,是中华文明大格局内所具有的文化多样性与多样性文化能够彼此互动滋养但又坚守各自特色持续发展的生动写照。

    宋瓷在功能造型上也已驾轻就熟,从而形成了不同的功能系列,如日用系、茶饮系、宗教系、观赏系等,每个功能系具体造型及其装饰图案和技法又是千姿百态,花样翻新,极具匠心。正是在这种强大的造型塑造能力的基础上,瓷器全面进入了人们的创作、生活、信仰、审美、典仪、交友、风俗、经济诸领域,成为中华文明在两宋时代进入高峰期的又一实证。

    中国瓷器外销,至迟起于东晋南朝,在唐代,瓷器已成中国外销产品之大宗,但只有到宋代,瓷器才完全取代此前的丝绸外销之地位,从而一举夺得中国外销产品之冠的地位。东亚、中亚、北非及东非沿海国家等都有宋瓷之出土。中国陶瓷技术在这一时期深刻影响了世界多个国家的瓷业生产。如朝鲜、日本、埃及、伊朗等都受到中国陶瓷工艺影响。这时,沿海地区都大面积兴起了外销瓷的生产,相关窑口、窑场难以计数,推动了中国沿海地区的经济大开发、海港城市及国际化城市兴起和中国与世界各国的经济文化的深度交流,“海上丝绸之路”“陶瓷之路”达到了历史的高峰,“瓷都”景德镇和“陶都”宜兴也是在这一历史背景下获得发展的机遇并奠立了坚实的根基。
