        ①扬州是我国玉器加工的重要基地之一。
        ②扬州的琢玉工艺源远流长，古籍《书经·禹贡篇》便有“雍州贡琳琅”、“扬州贡瑶琨”的记述，把扬州琢玉史追溯到4000年前的夏代。1977年在扬州蜀冈尾闾，发现新石器时代后期氏族公共墓葬60多处，有石斧、石锛、玉璧、玉琮等器物，说明早在4000年前的夏代，先民们就在这里生产生活，有了玉石琢磨的活动。
         ③汉代扬州的琢玉工艺，随着经济和政治的变化，更有了进一步的发展。从出土的玉器中，可知扬州玉器到了汉代，由小件发展到中件，从一般的装饰品玉镯、玉环发展至观赏的玉蝶、玉璧、辟邪等。唐代的扬州琢玉，在当时手工业兴盛中有新的发展。一方面，贵族豪门用之于装饰楼阁建筑炫耀门庭，所谓“雕栏玉户”者是也。另一方面，在民间以小件玉器作为佩饰用品亦渐开风气，同时扬州玉器和琢玉技艺也陆续对外交流。宋、元、明时代，扬州玉器已向陈列品方面发展，花鸟、炉瓶等品种日见丰富，琢玉中的镂空、圆雕技法亦始于宋代。扬州琢玉工艺发展到清代中叶，可以说诸品齐备，艺术水平空前提高。尤其是乾隆年间进入全盛时期，扬州成为全国玉材的主要集散地和玉器主产制作中心之一。两淮盐政除在建隆寺设有玉局，大量承制清朝宫廷各种大型陈设玉器外，每年还按岁例向朝廷进贡大量玉器。如：有名的白玉如意，用和田羊脂玉琢制，玉料洁白无瑕，凝腻如脂，造型精致典雅，被定为“扬州八贡”之一，每年都要大批送缴宫廷，供皇宫内院陈设或作为对臣下进行奖赏的“御品”。现在，北京故宫博物院珍藏的清宫中重达千斤、万斤的近十件大型玉器多半出于扬州琢玉艺人之手。由此可见，清代扬州琢玉技巧和艺术水平之高，生产规模和作业能力之大，能工巧匠之多，实是前所未有。
       ④进入20世纪50年代，扬州琢玉业开始复兴，成为现代中国玉器的主要产区。今天的扬州玉器，全面继承和发展了传统优良技艺。艺师们设计制作了大批造型优美、琢工精致的玉器，艺术水平仍居全国前列，产品在国际市场上享有盛誉。70年代初琢制的《白玉宝塔炉》，1986年琢成的《白玉五行塔》，同年琢制完成的《聚珍图》碧玉山，1989年运用薄胎工艺琢成的青玉《百寿如意》，1990年运用“山子雕”工艺琢成的白玉山《大千佛国图》，均荣获国家金杯。上述5件玉器，经国家评定为珍品，现收藏在中国工艺美术馆珍宝馆内。
