    For many years, we couldn't talk with the deaf. These deaf people couldn't use a spoken language.

    But beginning in the 1700s, the deaf were taught a special language. Using this language, they could share thoughts and ideas with others. The language they used was a language without sound. It was a sign language.

    How did this sign language work? The deaf learnt to make certain movements with their hands, faces and bodies. These movements stood for things and ideas. People might move their forefingers across their lips. This meant "you are not telling the truth". They might tap their chin with three fingers. This meant "my uncle".

    The deaf learned to see a finger alphabet. They used their fingers to make the letters of the alphabet. In this way, they spelled out words. Some deaf people could spell out words at a speed of 130 words per minute.

    The deaf don't use the sign language and finger spelling as much as they once were. Today, the deaf learn to understand others by watching their lips. They also learn how to speak.

韩凭夫妇

    宋康王舍人韩凭【韩凭,或作韩朋。韩凭与何氏生死不渝的爱情故事因为表达了人民的美好愿望,隋唐以后,广泛流传,但以《搜神记》所记为最早】,娶妻何氏,美,康王【宋康王,战国宋国的末代国君,名偃,暴虐无道,溺于酒色,往往射杀臣下,当时称为“桀宋”】夺之。凭怨,王囚之,论为城旦【城旦,一种刑罚,被处城旦罪的人,发往边地,白天伺察寇虏,夜里修造长城】。妻密遗凭书,缪其辞【故意把话说得不明白】曰:“其雨淫淫,河大水深,日出当心。”既而王得其书,以示左右,左右莫解其意。臣苏贺对曰:“其雨淫淫,言愁且思也。河大水深,不得往来也。日出当心,心有死志也。”俄而凭乃自杀。

    其妻乃阴腐其衣。王与之登台,妻遂自投台下,左右揽之,衣不中手【衣服经不起拉拽】而死。遗书于带曰:“王利其生,妾利其死。愿以尸骨,赐凭合葬。”

    王怒,弗听,使里人埋之,冢相望也。王曰:“尔夫妇相爱不已,若能使冢合,则吾弗阻也。”宿夕之间,便有大梓木生于二冢之端,旬日而大盈抱,屈体相就,根交于下,枝错于上。又有鸳鸯,雌雄各一,恒栖树上,晨夕不去,交颈悲鸣,音声感人。宋人哀之,遂号其木曰“相思树”。相思之名起于此也。南人谓此禽即韩凭夫妇之精魂。今睢阳有韩凭城,其歌谣【指韩凭妻何氏所作自明其志的歌。据《彤管集》,何氏所作之《乌鹊歌》,其词如下:“南山有鸟,北山张罗,鸟自高飞,罗当奈何!乌鹊双飞,不乐凤凰;妾是庶人,不乐康王”】至今犹存。
