We can impact our world by teaching our children character-by being examples of them.

   I was one of the young US soldiers in Saudi Arabia. At one time before the Internet，our only lifeline to friends and family was the mail we sent and received.

One evening the mail soldier called my name and，instead of a letter，handed me a large box from my grandmother in Oklahoma. One of the great hardships of the war for me was the absence of my grandmother's cooking—her fried chicken and onion，corn bread，and，most of all，her desserts. But on that evening I was about to take a gastronomic（美食的） journey home: I opened the box and found two dozen pies made by my grandmother.

A man from New York approached and asked me what I had received. I couldn't answer；my mouth was full of pie. So I just offered him one. “So nice！”he said. “What are they？”He had to wait a few moments for an answer，but eventually I explained. As insurance，I offered him another pie to keep him quiet.

Once a day for the next three weeks，I imagined returning home to my grandmother's kitchen，if only I had had a few sweet bites at a time.

Some of my earliest memories are associated with my grandmother's pies. She had been baking pies since before the Great Depression. She would have astonished the judges on today's TV cooking challenges. I remember coming across a persimmon（柿子）tree once while out hiking. It was autumn，and the fruit was soft and sweet. I picked a few dozen and brought them to Grandma. Guess what！The next day I walked into her kitchen to find a persimmon pie waiting for me.

   As a waitress I have met and seen all types of people. I think it is _____ that brings us all together. I was about to _____ my job one afternoon and go home when a family came in.

As they sat down, they _____ that they were on their way home. And they added they just had enough money to buy their children only a _____ snack and that all they needed was _____ I showed them a few things on the menu and _____ them what they would like.

   A couple of weeks back，my friend had a yard sale（庭院拍卖会）.She ___________ to sell some of our stuff for us. I thought it would be a good chance to ___________ my 7-year-old son's room and sell some toys that he no longer _______.We agreed that whatever we sold in toys would be his ______.

The night before the sale，we loaded up the ___________ with toys and a little bike that he was now ___________tall for. Within five minutes her doorbell rang. A little boy was standing there. His English was not very good but he asked if the bike was really ____________.She said yes and told him that he could have it for nothing. He smiled，jumped on the bike and ____________ away.

Later that evening when I told my son how much money he had ____________ at the yard sale, he was very excited. The next day we were going to take the money to the bank. He asked about a few of his things, ____________ if they had been sold. When he asked about the bike, I told him about the little boy and that he made a big ____________because he got the bike for free. The smiles on my son's face were truly ____________, much more than when I told him how much he had made. He was so excited to hear that someone else would get good ____________out of that little bike.

Last Sunday, I go to the Beijing Olympic Forest Park with my friend Chris. As soon as we got there, we were so attracting by the breathtaking scenery that we couldn’t help take many photos to record the beautiful moments. As we walked on, we noticed a kite hanging up on a branch, but its owner, little boy, was too short to get it down. The boy looked worried but we decided to help him. Unlucky, the kite was also beyond their reach. Then we looked around and found a slick, with that we got the kite down. We gave the kite away back to the boy. He was very delightful and thanked us for what we did.
