Do you like to learn about what is in the world around you？Do you often notice things that your friends don't notice？When you become interested in something，do you ask people about it and read books about it？Do you sometimes do experiments to find answers？If so，then you think in much the same way that a scientist thinks.

In school and at home no doubt you will read about scientific discoveries. Are there any good ways to help you read science then？Let's consider each of the four rules that you should follow.

1. KEEP YOUR MIND ON WHAT YOU ARE READING. Surely no one can successfully read a science article or a science textbook while thinking of other things. Many a car has run through a stop light because a careless driver was thinking of something besides his driving. The same thing is true of reading. If you think of nothing else while you are reading，you will become a better reader.

2. KNOW WHY YOU READ. The chapter titles and subtitles in science articles are usually worded in such a way that they attract your curiosity（好奇心）and make you want to read. They often tell you what you are going to read about and why you should read. The questions found at the beginning of the chapters guide you toward the information you want. Knowing why you read will help you become a better reader in science.

3. KNOW THE MEANING AND THE PRONUNCIATION OF EVERY WORD. Through the context，word structure rules and the glossary（词汇表）in your science book，you can discover the meaning and the pronunciation of most words in the articles. If a word is not in the glossary，use the dictionary.

4. FIT YOUR SPEED TO YOUR NEED. To get all the important information from your science book，you must read by degrees and carefully. Directions for experiments demand especially careful reading. If you misread them，the experiment may fail and you may reach wrong conclusions.

   The term "First Lady" was once used in 1860 during the term of James Buchanan. President Buchanan（the 15th president）was unmarried，so his niece，Harriet Lane，assumed the duties of the presidential hostess. She was first referred to as First Lady on March 31，1860 in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Monthly.

When George Washington became president of the United States，his wife，Martha，became known as "Lady Washington". Just as George Washington had to establish the rules for future U. S. presidents，Martha defined（界定）the role of First Lady for future first ladies.

Martha was a small，active woman who was always fashionably dressed. She took on a public role and was a gracious（亲切的）hostess at public events. Her duties as First Lady included managing the presidential household，paying social calls to the wives of important members of society，and hosting a weekly reception at the presidential mansion for ordinary citizens. However，she much preferred to live a quiet，private life.

Martha was born to John and Frances Dandridge，a well-to-do planter family situated in New Kent County，Virginia. She married a wealthy plantation owner，Daniel Custis，at the age of 18. He was 20 years her senior；she was widowed at age 25.

Martha Dandridge Custis married George Washington on January 6，1759 at the age of 27. It's said that Martha was devoted to George. She joined him at his camps for extended periods of time during the Revolutionary War.

Martha did not have any children with George，but she had four children with her first husband. Two of her children died in childhood；the other two were raised by her and George，but died as young adults.

Martha Washington once said，"I think I am more like a state prisoner than anything else. There are certain bounds（限制范围）set for me which I must not depart from. "

   Life is filled with ups and downs. When you feel like you're experiencing more downs than ups，sometimes it helps to get a little tough love. That's why we put together this list of five harsh（残酷的）truths that will help you grow.
