大家知道电车上很容易挤丢套鞋,特别是旁边有人稍稍使劲一挤,后边再粗鲁地踩你鞋后跟一脚,这样一来,你的套鞋就没有了。
丢掉一只套鞋,本来也不过是小事一桩。
我的那只套鞋一转眼的工夫就没了,简直快得惊人。
我记得,上电车的时候两只套鞋都在脚上。
可是,下车后,我看了一下脚:一只还在,另外一只却无影无踪了。靴子还在脚下,袜子也没丢,衬裤也在身上,可套鞋不见了,就少了一只套鞋。
去追电车,这怎么可能……我脱了剩下的那只套鞋,用报纸包上,就这么上班去了。我想:下班后再找吧,鞋应该不会丢的,能找回来。
一下班,我就去找套鞋。我先找了一个认识的电车司机,和他商量怎么办。
经他一指点,心里踏实了。他说:“算你运气好,把鞋丢在电车上,你要感谢老天了。要是丢在别的公共场所,那也许就不保险啦。丢在电车上,保险没事儿。我们局里有个失物招领处,到那儿就可以领回失物,没问题。”

“还是一个破落户”
鲁迅毕竟是“五四”时代的知识分子,性情又和郭沫若那一类人很不相同,不习惯在精神上迅速地脱胎换骨,因此,在整个三十年代上半叶,他只要谈到民众,多半都还是重复以前的看法。他屡次打比喻,说现代中国的历史就是几个人轮番变戏法,老百姓呆头呆脑地围着看。回忆往事,他记起家乡旧时的“堕民”,不禁感慨他们“不但安于做奴才,而且还要做更广泛的奴才,还得出钱去买做奴才的权利”;愈到晚年,他对民众的揭发还愈深刻。
既然给社会诊病的时候,他常常还是照着老思路,他接着提治疗意见,就难免还是要抄旧方。事实上,在他生命的最后几年,他不断地重复这种中国人必得向外国学习的“五四”式的启蒙主张。他说中国人的“哑”,是因为精神上的“聋”,倘再不输入精神的粮食,中国人便要成为尼采所说的“未人”。于是他提倡“拿来主义”,再三强调,说这是当务之急:“启蒙工作在现在是最需要的。”
也就从三十年代初开始,他一面说“唯无产者才有将来”,一面又读起了中国的史书,尤其是宋、明两代的野史。他会在这个时候去读这些书,本身就说明了他对现实的绝望,正像他自己说的:“一个人处在沉闷的时代,是容易喜欢看古书的。”他向来有一种从今天看出昨天的锐利的眼光,三十年代的中国又恰似大厦将倾,一派末世景象,他越是细读宋、明野史,就越觉得自己也正活在那样的时代。心里这样想,笔下就不免也要这样写,于是他三十年代的私人通信和公开文章中,不断出现了以古比今的文字。直到一九三六年,他还不断以明末的事情,来比附现实中文学家的“逸民气”和老百姓的怯懦性,那种以直自己正是活在宋季和明末的强烈感觉,始终没有消散。
心中存着这样一面古代的镜子,脑中又时时闪过历史循环的念头,鲁迅对现实中的人事,看法就自然会和周围的人很不一样。一九三四年,周作人在上海的《人间世》杂志上发表一首打油诗,编者又加上“五十自寿”的标题,引来蔡元培、钱玄同等人的一连串和诗,一时间颇为热闹。这引起上海等地的左翼青年作家的不满,纷纷撰文批评,有的措辞还相当激烈,闹得沸沸扬扬。“左联”的许多年轻人都在那里愤愤地声讨周作人,鲁迅却回过身来看透了他们的心肠,而这是连他们自己也未必能看清的,鲁迅与他们的精神距离,实在是太大了。
一九三○年秋天,上海文化界的共产党组织通过美国记者斯沫特莱,租了一家荷兰人开设的西餐馆,给鲁迅庆祝五十岁的寿辰。到了那一天,上海的几乎所有左翼文化团体都派代表来参加,把那家餐馆挤得满满的,气氛相当热烈,鲁迅也很高兴。可是,当他站起来致辞时,却说出这样一番扫兴的话:我现在被人请求出来领导无产阶级文学运动,我的几位年轻的朋友还坚持要我做一个无产阶级作家。我要是真装作一个无产阶级作家,那就幼稚可笑了,我的根子是植在农村中、农民中以及学者的生活中。我也不相信中国的知识分子的青年,没有对工人、农民的生活、希望和痛苦的体验,就能创作出无产阶级的文学……这整篇讲话,简直好像是故意在强调他和那些给他祝寿的人的精神差别,后面那几句,更是明显夹着刺了。他对那些明明和他一样——或者还不如他,却摇身一变,以无产阶级自居,大骂他落伍的人,一直耿耿于怀,只要有机会,他就要指责他们的善变。他这样去指责别人,自己就更会警惕,即使真是非常欣赏那激进的左翼浪潮,他理智上也会不断地提醒自己站稳双脚,不要使自己整个陷进那潮水中去。所以,连向激进的青年表示奋斗的决心,他往往也很注意分寸,只是说“呐喊助威,则从不辞让”,并不自居为中军。直到一九三五年,他还对一位亲近的朋友这样描述自己:“使我自己说,大概也还是一个破落户,不过思想较新”,依旧是沿用十年前那个“中间物”的说法。看起来,一直到最后,他都还保持着这份清醒的自觉,他知道自己究竟是怎样一个人。
