We all know that smiling is important when meeting new people. However, new research（研究） suggests that 【小题1】 types of smiles have a great impact（印象） on what people think of us.

There are a great number of sayings about the 【小题2】 of smile. ‘Peace begins with a smile.’‘ A smile is the best welcome.’ ‘Life is short but a smile only takes a second.’ They are all good suggestions. But it may not be as 【小题3】 as that. According to new research, if you want to make a good impression（印象） when you meet people, it’s not just that you smile. It’s 【小题4】 you smile.

The study was carried out by a research group in Scotland. They looked at people’s responses to different smiles. They found that responses changed greatly.

Through this they have【小题1】 that three types of smiles do not work well: The first is ‘The Enthusiast’（热情过度者），very wide, all teeth showing, possible proof that you can have too much of a good thing. Then there is the ‘Big freeze’, a fixed smile that looks practiced and 【小题2】. Finally comes ‘The Robot’, a small, thin smile without any 【小题3】 .

The group also warns about smiling too quickly, saying it can make you look insincere. The best smile , they say, is slower and floods brightly 【小题4】 the whole face.

Mum's Christmas Surprise

Molly ran back home from school and dropped her schoolbag on the sofa. Then on the table she saw “Mum's Wish Book” – a mail order catalog（商品目录） from a gift shop. “Mum,” she said excitedly to herself,“this year you'll get the gloves you want!” Molly had walked a dog for a neighbor and saved her______all year to buy Mum the gloves.

She opened “Mum's Wish Book” and hoped that she could find these gloves in it. Tears ran down her face when she saw the gloves in the catalog. Mum wouldn't buy them for herself, because the family had a _____ time on the farm. She once heard Mum say to Dad, “Maybe some day, I'll have the money to get them.”

Molly ran out by the back door and went straight to the post office. There she carefully filled out the order form torn from the catalog.

“I need to buy a stamp to send the form.” She said to Mr. Smith, the only worker in the post office. 

“Umm, a pair of gloves?” said Mr. Smith, as he passed a stamp to her.

It was Christmas that no one would ever forget.

It is OK to make mistakes（犯错）.

Making mistakes is something we all do, and I am still a nice and useful person when I make them, there is no reason for me to get upset when I make a mistake.    Minoru Yamasaki was a well-known American architect (建筑师). He was born in 1912 in Seattle, Washington. Minoru went to college to study architecture. Every summer he worked in a fish factory to help pay for college. He slept in a room with 100 other men.

Yamasaki sometimes dreamed about his work. Once he woke up at three o’clock in the morning. He remembered a building that was in his dream. He got up and started to draw. He used a new design for the buildings. These buildings  are now the Century Plaza Hotel, and Tower in Los Angeles, California..

Yamasaki was different from other architects. His buildings give people a feeling of peace and happiness. Many of his designs have pools of water, flowers, and windows on the roof to let in light. He wanted to give them a place away from the busy ways of modern life.

Yamasaki worked for several companies. But his success began when he started his own company. In 1956, he won the Architect’s First Honor Award for his design of an airport in St. Louis, Missouri. He won two more awards over the next five years. In 1962, he designed the World Trade Center in New York. In 1993, a bomb exploded (炸弹爆炸) in it. But the buildings did not fall down because they had a good design.

Yamasaki had strong opinions about his buildings. They had to be built his way. He refused to change the design of his buildings, even if he lost a job. Minoru Yamasaki died on Jun,2 1986. He designed more than 300 buildings. People will enjoy the design and beauty of his buildings for a very long time.
