Mr. Read lived in a city. He wrote a lot of novels and the young men liked to read them. And he was often visited. It took him much time to meet them. Some visitors talked much with him and at last he didn't like it. He told his servant(仆人) to stop the strangers from troubling him.
One morning he was writing a novel when the door was knocked at. He hoped to finish writing it as soon as possible and he had no time to meet anybody. He told the servant he did not want to be troubled. The servant opened the door and found it was Mr. Baker, one of Mr. Read's old friends."Is Mr. Read at home, Mabel?" asked Mr. Baker.
She wanted to let him in but suddenly(突然) remembered what she was told.
"Sorry, Mr. Baker," said the servant. "He's gone out."
"Where has he gone?"
"I don't know."
"When will he come back?"
"Sorry, he didn't tell me about it."
Mr. Baker understood his friend wouldn't see him. He got mad and left. That afternoon Mr. Read finished his novel. He felt sorry for Mr. Baker and wanted to apologize to his old friend. He got there and shouted, "Is Mr. Baker at home?"
Mr. Baker heard it was his friend. He remembered what happened that morning. He didn't open the door and answered, "Sorry, I'm not in." "I have heard it's you, Mr. Baker."

For most people, it is easy to read faster. Your reading speed is just a matter of habit. At first, however, you may need to change your bad reading habits. It is important to pay attention when you read. Some people read books and watch TV at the same time. They can't concentrate on the reading material as well as the TV programs. A teacher once told me that I could learn anything well if I did three things: pay attention, pay attention and pay attention.
There are some simple things that you can do to pay better attention and get more from reading. Many researchers say that you will improve your reading ability if you preview the passage before you actually read every word of it. Previewing is a good way to improve your ability to pay attention.To do a preview you should:
● spend 30-60 seconds;
● look at the title of the passage;
● look at the headings and subheadings. They are usually underlined, in italics (斜体字) or in dark print;
● look at the pictures, forms and explanations;
● read the first and last paragraphs quickly and glance(扫视) at the first sentence of each paragraph;
● close the book and ask yourself:
What is the main idea?
What kind of passage is it?
What is the author's purpose?
You might not think that you could do all these things in so little time, but if you do the preview correctly, you will have a good general idea of the passage. If you have a general idea, you will be able to understand and remember the passage better.
If you can preview better, your ability to pay attention will be better.

4.回答问题- (共1题)
I love to write! Even since I was a little girl, I wrote stories on my notebooks and on little scrips of paper. I told stories to my friends. As a grown-up, I have written over 100 books! That's a lot! As a teacher, it's my goal to encourage all of my students to love to write.
Writing is easy if you're careful enough, I told them. Everyone I meet is a possible character.Everything I see or I do is a possible scene in a book. Start looking around you. You'll be amazed at what you discover.
Anyone can be a writer. You just put your pencil on your paper and write what you like to read, step by step.
● Create great characters. If you know your characters well, they'll write the story for you.
● Interest the reader right at the beginning. You can start your stories with dialogue or action. If you can make the reader ask questions, then he has to keep reading to find out the answers.
● Following the steps. The steps for every story is almost the same: Introduce the characters and the conflict(冲突); things get worse; all seem lost; the hero saves the day!
● Balance is the key. Remember, when writing, it never hurts to add a little humor.
