China’s highly-respected translator and writer Yang Jiang passed away on 25 May, 2016 in Beijing, aged 105.【小题1】 As a baby she liked laughing. Her parents let every daughter develop their character freely. Therefore, Yang had a happy childhood.

Yang graduated from university and went to Tsinghua University as a postgraduate(研究生) in the1930s. There she met Qian Zhongshu 【小题2】Then they went to England for further study.

After returning to China in 1938, Yang taught at Shanghai Fudan Liberal Arts College and Tsinghua University. In the- 1950s, she worked for Peking University and started to learn Spanish. 【小题3】Her translation has been printed over a million times, and has been presented as national gifts to visiting leaders of other countries.

【小题4】 The novel The Old Wang written in 1984 was selected as the passage in our middle school textbook. Besides, her famous works Baptism(《洗澡》) and We Three also became a household name in China.

   Halloween was on Monday, 31 October. We had a whole week to celebrate. It was called the Spirt Week.

On Friday before the Spirit Week, we were allowed to wear Halloween costumes to school. I dressed up as a witch(女巫). That was pretty fun! We got points for our class by dressing up.

We also had performances during the week. Each class had a theme. We performed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The performance included a dance and a skit(滑稽短剧). I played the character of March Hare in the skit.

On Monday, we arrived at school at 6 a m. to do our last rehearsal (排练). I was so excited, even though it was early in the morning and it was very cold outside. We gave the performance in the main gym, and every student was there. I think we really did an excellent job! Although I only played a small role in the skit, I was still proud and happy. I learnt much knowledge about acting by performing the skit. The other two classes performed on the following days during the Spirit Week. Their skits were also very nice.

Our hallway was beautifully decorated. Everyone's locker was painted with colourful pictures. The curtains were hung below the light to make the hallway look dreamy. I liked it so much.

I really had a wonderful time during the Spirit Week! I am looking forward to the next Halloween.

   On 14 March, 2018. one of science's brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking, the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.

Hawking is considered by many people to be the greatest scientist in history since Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe began with the Big Bang(大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His theories became the base for a lot of later research. He also wrote books to help people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time, which has sold more than 10 million copies around the world, according to CNN.

Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong will(意志力) and optimistic attitude. When Hawking was 21, he was diagnosed with a serious disease that stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and "speak” using a computerized voice. But this didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colourful life. “If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically(心理上) disabled as well" he once said.

Hawking travelled around the world to attend science conferences visiting every continent, including Antarctica. He was also a fan of pop culture and appeared on TV shows such as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory. Hawking has millions of fans in China. His first message of Sina Weibo was a greeting to his "friends in China" posted in both English and Chinese.

He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon When he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness(失重). He hoped to travel into space one day.

In 2013, Hawking spoke about how he felt life was unfair when he first knew his disease. “But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly satisfied with my life, “he said.
